Book Description

February 1990
A love as timeless as the midnight sun... Wild and free, beautiful Sunniva Mellby had no interest in the housewifely arts her mother taught her; nor would she meekly accept the middle-aged bridegroom her father proposed. There was only one man for her--Raven, as fierce and proud as his namesake--and she would risk banishment to ride unfettered at his side. Only his kisses turned her blood to fire, only his hard warrior's body could penetrate her maidenly reserve. Yet on the very morn of their wedding, Sunniva was spirited away by the feared Viking chieftain Rolf Gunnarson. Her heart breaking, Sunniva swore no man would take by force what she had freely given Raven; no mere Viking would break the vows of never-ending love between them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Viking romance, May 25, 2006

From the back cover:

A love as timeless as the midnight sun...

Wild and free, beautiful Sunniva Mellby had no interest in the housewifely arts her mother taught her; nor would she meekly accept the middle-aged bridegroom her father proposed. There was only one man for her--Raven, as fierce and proud as his namesake--and she would risk banishment to ride unfettered at his side. And my review:

This was just an average read. Nothing awful, but nothing spectacular, either. The author did a good job of her research, and also in being able to weave the historical background into the novel without distracting from the story. Not many authors can do this well, and I applaud Joan Van Nuys for a job well done.

However, the falling in love part of this story was over very quickly, which was kind of dissapointing. It wasn't a love at first sight story, but the transition from being best friends to being in love was achieved in just a handful of pages. I was left feeling a little cheated.

Also, Raven and Sunniva (beautiful name!) are seperated for a lot of the book. This may be just a "dated" thing, since this was done more often in books written at the time (over 15 years ago). But I find it hard to enjoy a romance where the lovers are barely ever together.

Some of the sections of this book were very short and choppy. It often seemed that the section would end just as things were beginning to get interesting. Then the section would end at a whole day would have passed. This kept jerking me out of the story, rather than drawing me into it.

This is a book that I would borrow, not buy. It's an okay read if you have nothing else on hand, but it's not a "can't put it down" book, or one that will fully engage your emotions.
