This review is from: Beloved Vampire (Vampire Queen) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jessica Tyson finds herself in the middle of the Sahara desert looking for the tomb of a woman who died centuries ago. Farida's journal has kept Jessica sane through five years of torture from her former vampire master. She was partially third marked so she doesn't look like the 29 year old woman she is, she looks frail and is dying but she is determined to find Farida's tomb before she dies. She wants to die with her fantasy of the girl and her lover Lord Mason. The fantasy that has kept her alive this long, of a Djinn and his love for a slave girl so very long ago. She wants to find the tomb prove she was right, there is a love that can survive all, even death, for legend says that the Djinn to this day guards Farida's tomb and never lets harm come to his beloved.

When Jessica does manage to get to the tomb she finds not a Djinn waiting for her but a very ticked off vampire. He's mad that his beloved's resting place is disturbed. Jessica just wants to die now; her last dream has been shattered. Only once Lord Mason finds Jessica he is not so willing to let her go. Can she stand being bound yet again to a vampire? Even a kind one? One that saves her from death only to enslave her to himself? Will Jessica choose death over continuous torture again? And can Lord Mason's love bring her back from the hell she was in?

Joey W. Hill has a very complicated and intricate tale of love, loss and finding your soul again in Beloved Vampire. Jessica is a strong woman. She is on the verge of death and crawls on her hands and knees to find the woman's tomb that has held her sanity together all these years. She has been tortured almost beyond sanity. Can Lord Mason's love bring her all the way back from the hell she has lived? Lord Mason is a complicated vampire. He has a soul, conscious and heart that will make the readers fall in love with him. He wants to do the right thing, but Jessica is a very broken woman, and doing the right thing is very hard to do with her. How can you help someone when the help you give them drives them over the brink of sanity?

I found this novel to be very intense and very multi-layered. This is not a light read; this is a novel to pick up when you have some time. There are some situations that some readers might find objectionable, such as, but not limited to BDSM, torture and things that allude to many past horrors. I highly recommend taking the time to really read Beloved Vampire. I think you will fall in love with the characters as much as I have. This is the fourth in the Vampire Queen series, but can be read alone and enjoyed. I highly recommend reading the entire series, though, it really should not be missed. If you love your romance to be angst-ridden and extremely emotionally charged you really need to pick up Beloved Vampire by Joey W. Hill, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, August 4, 2009

This review is from: Beloved Vampire (Vampire Queen) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jessica Tyson is heading towards her death. She's spent the last five years under the thumb of a sadistic vampire. She's on the run and ready to be done with this life looking for a final resting place of a woman who's ancient journals have given her a thread of sanity through her ordeal.

When she's unexpectedly rescued, she is not sure if she'll ever have the ability to be whole again, let alone love.

Lord Mason still hasn't recovered from the loss of his wife but Jessica touches something in him like no one has in many years.

This is another (stand alone) story in Joey Hill's incredible Vampire series and this is my absolute favorite so far. It's a very intense story as Jessica has had some terrible abuse that is seen in flashback's but it's also a very moving story about faith, hope and the power of love.

There are some very special scenes with some of the characters of her previous stories, Lady Lyssa and Jacob and Lady Dani and Dev. A very moving and powerful story that I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and fantastic, May 17, 2010

This review is from: Beloved Vampire (Vampire Queen) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jess was stolen by a corrupt and cruel vampire 5 yrs ago. Forced to do unspeakable things and endure horrible torture she is quite traumatized. The only thing that got her through these five years is a diary she found depicting the love and life of Farida and Mason. When opportunity presents itself Jess is able to kill the cruel vampire that had held her hostage for so long. Wanting to complete one thing before she dies she heads to the Sahara to see Farida's burial site. On her deathbed from killing her previous master she makes it to Farida's eternal resting place. What she didn't expect to find was Mason and the fact he is a vampire. Unable to let her go Mason mark's her as his servant in order to grant her a chance at a real life. Flashing back in forth between Farida's journal and Jess' POV this is an incredible story of love lost and new love beginning. Understandably Jess has a hard time accepting what a severant life is suppose to be and that most vampires are not abusive. Being an erotic novel, it isn't what i expected, the erotica parts is mostly hearing what Jess went through and what Mason wants to do with her. There aren't that many scenes with Jess and Mason actually together having sex. Not to say that it isn't sexy as hell, just in different ways.
I loved this book, loved the journey Jess and Mason went through. There were also apperances of Lyssa & Jacob and Dev & Danny.
Highly reccomend this novel

Ok,
please do not skewer me but this is my first time reading material from this author. I purchased this book based on the glowing reviews I read here on this very forum. Maybe I set my expectations too high but goodness this book took up 10 hours of my life that I will never get back! the story itself was promising but it took every ounce of restraint in me to NOT skip any pages, convincing myself I would miss crucial information. The pace of this book was entirely too slow for my liking. I felt like Hill, was hammering home the main point relentlessly. I felt like yelling I get it! Jessica is damaged goods, Mason lives in a private hell...Let's move on! In retrospect that is the definition of insanity and clearly our heroine was in its deepest depths. Truth be told, this is a story that should have been summed up in 300 pages. It was just too longwinded for my taste. the ghost of Farrida for example, should have been exorcised a long time ago instead, her ghost dogs the footsteps of our hero and heroine making me question if either of them truely believes they have moved on from their tragic circumstances given the fact that our heroine tends to recite Farrida's words verbatim at every turn. Yes the message is conveyed that over time she will reclaim herself, mind body and soul but as it stood in the novel,I thought it too soon for her to make such a level of commitment to Mason only a few months after escaping the mouth of hell. I still felt the Stockholm syndrome was very much still in play w/ their romance despite the author's efforts to dispell it. Actually, I blame the author because she lingered in that world for 3/4s of the book making it impossible for anyone to buy into Jessica's (our heroine) "growth" from her harrowing experience. It all came across as too rushed in the end. the last 25 pages breaking away from the rest of the novel in a dead sprint that made me wonder why the hurry? I envisioned her editor signalling her to "wrap it up"
With that said, I do so look forward to reading the Vampire Queen's Servant. Lyssa and Jacob's story sounds interesting to say the least. If however, the writing drags as this one does, I doubt I will read another Joey Hill book and will stick with JR Ward instead.
Just a last FYI, if you do NOT possess a submissive personality, this book will grate your nerves. Maybe that's why I think I'll enjoy Lyssa's book. She reads as a very tough no nonsense type that doesn't mince words, stating what she thinks and moves on.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Hearts from TRS!, February 23, 2010

This review is from: Beloved Vampire (Vampire Queen) (Mass Market Paperback)
Joey W. Hill captivates me with this tale. Imagination, acts of courage that will astound even those who are used to reading about the paranormal, and a love story that is timeless in so many ways will keep the reader turning the pages in fascination. Eroticism flavored with bondage, domination and ménage relations is not for the faint of heart.

Unique twists to this book make it stand out from other paranormal romances. The story itself is one that builds the characters in our mind through many faceted looks at each through the eyes of the two main players and others they interact with. A truly different world is constructed that looks at vampires and other paranormal beings as an organized entity with a ruling counsel. For those who look for a unique book filled with a story told with expertise, romance and suspense, this is a winner. It's one of the best paranormal erotic tales I've read in a long time. - Dee Dailey

5.0 out of 5 stars Beloved Vampire-A Joyfully Recommended Title, November 29, 2009

This review is from: Beloved Vampire (Vampire Queen) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jessica is on a journey to her death, following the tale of true love to its final resting place. She escaped a master vampire and only wants to die in the presence of the beauty that died so long ago for love.
Mason watches as a strange woman defends his dead beloved. He may be a vampire, but something calls out for him to save the girl.

Can the two over come Jessica's fear of vampires and Mason's fear of losing another love? Will the vampire world allow it?

Beloved Vampire is spectacular is all it's raw glory. I loved Vampire's Claim and hoped that Beloved Vampire would be just as good and Joey W. Hill did not disappoint. To tell you the truth, for me, Beloved Vampire was even better. It starts with such heartbreak and loss. Jessica is so strong and she doesn't even know it. Mason is just as lost as Jessica. They need each other to become whole again. The passion and sensuality are all there in Beloved Vampire but it is so much more. It is really about the strength of character to survive hell.

Ms. Hill weaves the world of BDSM into the mastery of vampire life so effortlessly, it's like they were fated to be together. It is nice to see such a domineering character's love for his submissive. Beloved Vampire shows the beauty of a true D/s relationship in a way I would like to see more of in stories.

The beauty of Jessica and Mason in Beloved Vampire is just cause to Joyfully Recommended that everyone read this tale of life, love and overcoming one of the biggest obstacles, yourself.

I finished this book last night. Stayed up past the time I should have gone to bed but I had to know how the story ended. I wish I could have written this last night so I didn't have a day of work to dull the joy of the story. First I have to say that I thought Ms. Hill was going to drive me to sexual frustration with this story. I think this the first book that she has written that the hero and heroine don't claim each other until so close to the end of the book. However, there is so much sexual tension that I would squirm in my seat wanting to find a release for all the energy. I also have to say that this story is now at the top of my list of all time favorite books. Of course there are a lot of Ms. Hill's books in that category. I will also mention that there is a definite BDSM theme to this book and there are flashes of violence against the main female character so this book isn't going to be for everyone.

I have wanted Mason's story since you first mentioned him. He has intrigued me as much as Lady Lyssa and Lady Danny. Ms. Hill definitely didn't disappoint me. Mason's restraint and caring around Jessica melted my heart but there were times I wanted to shake him until his teeth rattled, much as Lady Lyssa and Jessica probably did. He is such a wonderful hero especially for his faults. He cares so much but there is a dangerous air to him that I wouldn't want to cross too much. I cried for his loss of Farida. I am not sure I wouldn't have done the same to her family and people if I had been in the same situation. Finally I will always have a soft spot for a Dominant male that is so confident and loving. They just make me HOT. I also was angry over the loss of his horse in such a brutal and unfeeling way. I love animals and it hurts me to see one tortured and killed.

Now for Jessica. She is such a brave and wounded soul. I so rooted for her to recover and see that not all vampires were like what she had been exposed to for five years. She is bright and intelligent and I could see why Mason was so attracted to her. I so enjoyed watching her bloom under his care. There were times I wished I could have held her and told her that she would get better and be able to face life again. I know she will be one of my favorite heroines for a long time.

I was also glad to see Lady Lyssa, Jacob, Lady Danny and Dev show up. I was excited about meeting Jacob and Lady Lyssa's son. I am sure he is going to be a handful when he is older. I have to wonder what this trio of mated pairs will be up to in the future. I am not sure the vampire world will survive with their stodgy ideals in tact if and/or when this groups decides things need to change. LOL

Beloved Vampire is such a wonderful book I know I am going to have to re-read it again soon. I love this series so much and I am now looking forward to Gideon's story with bated breath.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent vampire thriller, August 8, 2009
This review is from: Beloved Vampire (Vampire Queen) (Mass Market Paperback)
Master vampire Raithe tortured Jessica as his imprisoned servant for several years. She escaped by killing her tormentor. In the Sahara, she plans to die, but another vampire Mason saves her life. His retinue shows kindness towards his latest marked servant trying to help Jessica heal especially mentally.

At the same time she begins to recover from her horrific ordeal, the Vampire Council decides to execute Jessica for killing Raithe as no one is allowed to get away with killing a master except them no matter what evil he may have perpetrated on their slayer. Meanwhile Jessica becomes fascinated with the three-hundred years old diary of Farida, Mason's beloved human servant even as she ponders whether she wants to be his present day "concubine".

The latest Joey W. Hill vampire thriller (see A VAMPIRE'S CLAIM, THE VAMPIRE QUEEN'S SERVANT and THE MARK OF THE VAMPIRE QUEEN) is a terrific entry with a fascinating theme that a human servant who kills a master vampire for whatever reason (including rape) must be executed; the theory behind the premise is similar to the slave owners which to keep the masses from revolting and slaying their "owners". The story line is fast-paced from the onset as Jessica feels as arid as the Sahara that beckons her to add her dust to the sand. Vivid and filled with action as executioners are coming for the servant who killed her master, fans will relish Ms. Hill's super entry in an extraordinary saga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beloved Vampire, August 7, 2011

This review is from: Beloved Vampire (Vampire Queen) (Mass Market Paperback)
I started with book 1 and haven't been able to stop reading. It's easy at first to flinch a little at the world Joey Hill has created, but as I read through book 1 and the following books in the series, the world we're introduced to and the relationships in it become about so much more than they initially seem.

I love each book for different reasons, but this one really stands out for me. Having both characters, Lord Mason and Jessica, struggle to overcome pasts of horrible heartbreak and even worse torture, made their story together all the more powerful. The quick flashbacks Jessica has of the abuse she suffered were at times hard to read, but seeing her character grow from beginning to end was amazing.

I couldn't put the book down. The whole series has completely sucked me in, and I can't wait to start the next book!

I bought 3 of these books by Joey Hill..can be stand alones even though they are slightly interwoven. Like stated, they are definitely adult reading. Strong dominant vamp lead character, a different setting than the usual, and actually a strong lead heroine.. though at first yr thinking just a victim. Modern world with vamp world discreetly within. Some cruel things have been done to the H and are very descriptive but the overall story is one of love. Enjoyed!
