A New Space Music "Classic",
By
This review is from: Below the Mountain (Audio CD)
There aren't many purveyors of space music these days but Craig Padilla has been carrying the torch for the "new school" quite admirably. BELOW THE MOUNTAIN is a slice of analog synth heaven -- mesmerizing and immersive. This album is destined to be a touchstone in the annals of space music. Noteworthy tracks include "Woven Planet"--a destined-to-be classic of ebbing and flowing sequencer pulses; "Wandering Thought" with its somber, melancholy pipe organ-like backdrop; "Windspell" which builds up a spritely melody and ultimately dissolves into a blissful cascade of sound; and the epic closer "Alturas" which features a little bit of everything including something that sounds like a balalaika! All in all, a well-chosen balance of engaging sequencer sections and shimmering, tranquil moments.

A release worthy to be called a classic!,

Waxing the Berlin-school electronic sound of Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, American synthesist Craig Padilla carves out a signature sound on his album "Below the Mountain."
Immediately you are immersed into a spacey, analog world of lush soundscapes and blippy sequences that transport the listener out of this world. The production and attention to sound detail is superb, it is clear to see that hard and passionate work went into this album. I would highly recommend this album to anyone interested in space music or electronic music in general. |
