5.0 out of 5 stars The Masterpiece of Masterpieces, July 5, 2005
By
Miguel Gonzalez "palabras" (OAK PARK, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bembe (Audio CD)
This is truly one of the all-time great recordings of the 20th century. It captures the "Bembe" ritual from start to finish of the Santeria religion, from which much of Cuba's music derived. The percussion is driven by a trio of drummers playing the Bata drums - Iya, Omele and Okonkolo, which together conjure polyrhythms whose origins are distinctly African ... specifically Yoruban from what is now Nigeria. Any serious student of Afro-Cuban music *must* purchase this recording. And note the value of used discs (today listed at $69.99); this is a rare and much-sought-after recording that was once only available on vinyl. Get it while it's re-issued. Because it's bound to drop back out of print. And you'll have to pay a hefty premium.

5.0 out of 5 stars In Praise to the Orisha, June 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bembe (Audio CD)
This is an incredible CD! The songs and rythms literally touch the soul. From a meditative standpoint the songs transport the listener on subconscious level--even if you don't understand the lyrics. Cardona is to sacred orisha music what Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin was to Gospel--all soul, as true to form as you can get.

This is Orisha "gospel" with two of mankinds first musical implements-the voice and the drums.

5.0 out of 5 stars MILTON CARDONA MAKES ME PROUD, September 12, 2005
This review is from: Bembe (Audio CD)
MR.CARDONA STARTED OFF AS A BASS PLAYER IN NEW YORK CITY UNTIL HE SAW MONGO SANTAMARIA (REST IN PEACE) PLAYING IN THE STREETS OF NEW YORK, THE REST I DON'T HAVE TO TELL YOU. HE HAS A VERY SIMPLE, SINCERE WAY OF CHANTING THAT GETS INTO YOUR SKIN LIKE A LAXATIVE CLEANSING YOU OF ALL FILTH. IF YOU CLAIM TO LOVE THIS TYPE OF CULTURE WITHOUT HAVING BEMBE IN YOUR COLLECTION...YOUR FEET STINK AND YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN JESUS!!!
