We previously used a potty seat that had a padded seat and a ladder attached. It was a cute idea but was not very stable and the padded seat did not hold-up well. We purchased this BEMIS Next-Step seat to replace it, and we think this one is TERRIFIC. Very sturdy and sits on the bowl wobble-free (just like any high-quality regular, non-training seat would). The slow-close is great for not scaring my daughter or risking crushed fingers. My daughter transitioned to it without a peep and seems to find it both easy to use and comfortable. Great item.

One warning -- The "Mayfair" version of the "Next-Step" seat is also manufactured by Bemis. We ordered a "Mayfair" thinking it would be the same as our Bemis, and it is NOT. The quality is definitely not there and it does not have the slow-close feature. Definitely spring the extra few dollars for the BEMIS slow-close version.

We bought the 583SLOW. white round wood molded toilet seat.
This sure enough is a good child/adult round toilet seat.
Very easy to install. The adult seat is sturdy and sits solidly.

But it's claim to fame proves to be it's downfall: the smaller child seat hinges onto the back of the adult seat. "child seat removes for easy cleaning". Well that hinge is an open type. And it continually pops off it's open hinge. For an adult trying to keep it lined up proves abit frustrating. When our child try's to operate the sets it usually come unhinged and there she is again wandering the house, toilet seat in hand.

Bemis has to design a tighter back hinge.
I don't think it necessarily needs to be one that comes off readily.
Just give it a really good old hinge.

I really wanted to like this seat seeing how much I respect the Bemis Manufacturing Corporation. Unfortunately I feel, almost, embarrassed for them that after so many years they still haven't gotten it right.

Seeing that Bemis has been making toilet seats for 73+ years, you would think they would have a perfected unit and it be thoroughly tested.

We have 3 of these toilet seats in our house.

In 1932, Bemis started making toilet seats, so it is almost irresponsible that they still have manufacturing issues. Bemis started out making Wisconsin wooden wagons and furniture in 1901, so it makes sense they would use Enamel Coated Bonded\Molded Wood for their toilet seats now. Ironically, they were the first company in 1939 to make plastic seats.

More on that in a bit, here is the low-down:

The Good:
- Love the Whisper close technology. It really does close nice and smooth, and prevents the kids from slamming it down.
- The seat is nice and heavy and feels like it is made really well. Is it?
- Bemis is a very respectable 100 year old company, and thrives in many craftsman based industries.

The Bad:
- As stated before, the seat is Enamel Coated Bonded\Molded Wood, which leaves for room for plenty of issues. When a child urinates, they are not a great shot, so they tend to hit-the-seat. The porous nature of enamel and wood means the uric acid from the urine almost instantly stains the seat. Not only does it stain it, but it also leaves a ring, no matter if you clean the stain immediately or not.
- Since the material is so porous it also leaves room for Bacteria to absorb into the wood in the areas that were damaged by the urine.

Update:

The insert kept falling out, and falling out, and falling out, and finally one of the pegs that holds it in place broke off. We had to toss the seat, and the two year old is still two, and still potty-training, and mad as he can be about it.

First review:
My two year old suddenly decided to potty train, and he is a super tiny two year old, very short, and very lightweight. He couldn't manage standard inserts or the big potty, and we'd left our family potty seat similar to this one behind in a move. So I ordered a new one.

It's such an improvement over the old designs! The no slam feature doesn't work for the little seat. My toddler loves to yank it down, slam it into the adult seat, and then slam it back up into the lid. Oy! But hardly a real issue. The insert is too light weight to pinch his fingers or any other bits. It's just a little noisy.

The lid with the insert tucked into it is so slim, but solid! The old design we had kept falling forward. This one behaves just like a regular toilet lid, unless you're two, and need the smaller insert to come down. The magnet is strong, but the little one can manage the seat entirely on his own.

Features:
Magnet to hold insert in place in the lid.
Whisper close hinges.
Easy clean twist to remove hinge feature, to remove seat from the sta-tite bolts.
Child seat snaps in and out, so that you don't have to replace the seat when the child out grows the insert.
Made from 100% recycled wood. (And well painted.)

I love this potty lid, some reviews say the seat is too narrow for adults but for me it works fine I didn't think it was uncomfortable at all, also some people had issues with the magnet since the toddler seats sticks to the lid every time its closed, I put a cover on the lid, the ones they sell at walmart with the matching bath rug, so the magnet does not stick to the toddler seat and the toddler seat is always down unless u want to pick it up. It goes down and up without a problem, it does not unhinge easily to were it keeps falling off like some had said, It is really great!! My child is 2 and this seat is worth every penny to finally kick that stinky potty pot to the curb!! lol...
