5.0 out of 5 stars Classic live jazz from 2 masters.., September 3, 2001
This review is from: Ben & Buck (Audio CD)
I purchased "Ben and Buck" in the summer of 2000 up here in Canada. I have enjoyed it immensely, playing it often enough to 'wear the grooves out', so to speak. It was recorded in Switzerland in 1967 during a period when Buck Clayton was touring Europe and performing with local small group talent--in this case, the Henry Chaix quartet. However, their regular sax player sat out so that Ben Webster, who settled in Europe permanently in 1964, could join Buck at Kantonsschule Baden for this session. The boys really cook for "Hucklebuck" and "Perdido". More Ellingtonia with "Satin Doll" and "C Jam Blues". Buck solos his signature number "I Want a Little Girl". Ben steps up for 2 soulful, slow tunes: "My Romance" and "That's All"-pure heaven.. an older Webster still retained that trademark rich tone. Ten lengthy traks in all. Arild Wideroe had the foresight to produce/record these concerts-fortunately for us-and Sackville Records of Toronto is the proud distributor of this series of historic concerts. The review of "Canuckteach Jazz Guy" pretty much said it all. Excellent, and informative. Reviews like his really offer insight into details lost in the process. I'll just say, if you like small combos, live in a club setting, this is for you. Take a soft seat, kick back with a drink, turn volume up and listen to a mini JATP!
