4.0 out of 5 stars Very solid live album from BF5 June 4, 2013
Format:Audio CD
The Ben Folds Five 2.0 era started off, strangely, on that excellent Ben Folds 'best-of' compilation from 2011 called "The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrspective", where a new BF5 track "House" appeared. Then of course last year we got a whole new studio album from BF5, "The Sound of the Life of the Mind", picking up exactly where the "Reinhold Messner" album left of... 13 years earlier! Now comes this live album.

"Live" (15 tracks; 74 min.) is of course not to be confused with that other live album from 2002 called "Ben Folds Live" from the Ben Folds solo era. The album immediately starts off with a crowd-pleasing "Jackson Cannery", and then jumps straight into one of the new songs from "Life of the Mind", "Erase Me", and it is amazing how seemless the new songs fit into the older classics. (There are two other songs from the new studio album on here, "Do It Anyway" and "Draw A Crowd".) This is essentially a greatest hits live album, giving the people exactly what they came to hear. That means "Brick" (arguably the band's biggest hit ever) is here, as well as other classics like "Nacrolepsy", "One Angry Dwarf" and "Underground", just to name those. Interestingly, there is also one Ben Folds solo track on here, the excellent "Landed" (from his "Silverman" album--for a great story how this song came about, read Folds' liner notes in that "Best Imitation" compilation).

The guys (Ben Folds, Robert Sledge, and Darren Jessee) sound great and energized throughout, and it's really hard to believe that they took off 13 years as a band, you can't possibly tell from this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album! June 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Some live albums from bands just give the band's best rendition of the songs exactly how they appear on the studio albums. Ben Folds has never done this in any part of his career, and it really shows in this album! Take Narcolepsy for example, a good song on Reinhold Messner. But on this album he does a 7+ minute version of it with out of this world piano and bass solos. The piano is good on his studio recordings, but he really jazzes it up when playing live, and adds to and changes songs so that you aren't just hearing the same old thing again. That's why I've seen him 5 times and about to see him a 6th! This album definitely does not disappoint!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album June 5, 2013

Just put on the album for the first time, and loving the seamless transition between the old and new material. Ben Folds Five certainly strikes the right chord with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love these guys together April 8, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Robert Sledge's bass never sounded better, and Ben and Darren are right in there too. Love to hear these guys live anytime - good selections from multiple venues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ben Folds Five, picking up right where they left off December 2, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Ben Folds Five is one of my favorite bands, hands down, so I knew I was going to enjoy this album before I ever heard it. However, the inclusions of "Uncle Walter" and "Tom and Mary" were particular highlights for me. Two of my favorite BF5 songs, and ones that you just didn't hear live all that often.

It's clear that the guys still have the same energy and humor that has always made their music (and their shows) so enjoyable. Ben is an amazing songwriter, and Darren and Robert help create the best sound for those songs.

Live albums are generally more for people who are already fans of a group, so I wouldn't recommend this to anyone before they listen to at least a couple studio albums by the band, but if you are already a fan, this is a must buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not too different from prerecorded versions September 23, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you like Ben Folds Five then this is a great album, particularly if you don't otherwise own a lot of their music. The only problem is that many of the tracks aren't that different from prerecorded versions on other albums.
