Editorial Reviews

5th album from Ben Frost, performed by Ben Frost with Greg Fox (ex-Liturgy), Shahzad Ismaily and Thor Harris (SWANS) and largely written in Eastern DR Congo, A U R O R A aims directly, through its monolithic construction, at blinding luminescent alchemy; not with benign heavenly beauty but through decimating magnetic force.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nailed it. August 29, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Ben Frost is in great knick on this record and although his catalogue is getting deep now, I'd suggest this is still a great place to start for new listeners. The earlier reviewer who noted the quiet/loud dynamic is dead on and it seems a bit unnecessarily formulaic to place a quiet interlude on every odd numbered track before the speaker-freezing machine masterpieces that comprise the four even numbered tracks. Still, if that is the only drawback (and it probably is), just shuffle your ipod/stereo!
All up these are some sharp, occasionally hard hitting instrumentals that make me think Ben Frost is drawing inspiration from his adopted home. Should be more famous, like so much of the good stuff.

I listen to ambient music for about one hour every day when I study. I like dark ambient music, and this fits that bill. I enjoy the atmosphere that this creates, my only complaint is that the formula of "slow - slow - loud" didn't feel very intense. To me, music by "The Caretaker" is much more intense in that it creates a very heavy and dark atmosphere that feels tangible. Maybe I just didn't "get" this album, but the few non "slow - slow - loud" tracks were fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A band suits Frost June 26, 2014

This is my favorite work by Ben Frost. Including other musicians (including the amazing Shahzad Ismaly) suits him. Frost has already done great things, and it looks like he is going to do more yet.
