5.0 out of 5 stars There will be a Light
Once in a while there comes along an artist that just doesn't disappoint. Ben Harper is that type of artist. You can tell that by this project with the Blind Boys of Alabama. If you love LIVE gospel music you should definitely check out this DVD. The set is basic and the performances raw and unabashed. The concert alone is worth the price of this disc but to see the...

3.0 out of 5 stars More Harper than Blind Boys....
I was expecting the Blind Boys of Alabama to have a greater profile in the concert, they are back-up to Harper's concert. If you are a fan of the Blind Boys of Alabama it will leave you wishing they had been spotlighted more.

The concert alone is worth the price of this disc but to see the behind the scenes footage is priceless. I think the biggest compliment I can pay to this DVD is I play it on Sundays around the house to feel close to the Lord who is truly the light. Hopefully you will discover it and feel the same way too.

I can't say enough about this WONDERFUL DVD. I've been listening to There Will Be a Light, Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama's CD for two years straight, and I never tire of it. To actually see them performing the songs is a special treat. Plus, you get bonus songs that were not on the CD. Ben is a rare musical genius. Okay? And The Blind Boys of Alabama are an institution in the world of gospel music. If this DVD doesn't touch you, make you want to get out of your seat and dance and shout, then make a doctor's appointment because something's wrong with you! :o)

Five Stars all the way!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, December 3, 2005
This review is from: Ben Harper and The Blind Boys of Alabama: Live at the Apollo (DVD)
Alright so I am a new comer to the hi fi world with B&W 700 Series all over and rotel components and after watching my first DVD concert (that being Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama) I am compelled to write my first ever review. This was given to me as a gift from the sales person where I had bought my equipment and I can say that he knows what he's doing. Anyway! I have never heard of Ben Harper until after watching this DVD. My eyes and ears are asking me what took so long. This DVD has one of the best 5.1 sounds that I have ever heard with the odd person yowling in the background and the punch of the bass from the stage I trully felt that I was right there. I don't listen to gospel but this is an exception in many ways. Track 11 is so amazing I can't help but to believe. If you enjoy soul with great sound and picture this is a must have!

I bought this album because the Blind Boys of Alabama were featured. As a long time lover of black gospel music I'm very familiar with their work. Unfortunately, I couldn't say the same about Ben Harper. I'd never heard of him, but I figured the Blind Boys at the Apollo Theatre were a sure bet. Wrong! In my opinion Ben Harper sings his message songs with way too much intellect and very little soul. He's just plain boring. The Blind Boys, used as back up to his vanilla music, never catch fire. They are there for the job and their talent is completely wasted. Sorry Ben Harper fans, it's just my opinion. I'm sure his heart is in the right place, too bad his music is weak. Gospel fans, save your money for more satisfying fare.
