If you received an early BENQ XL2420Z unit with V1 firmware, there is a behavior in BENQ Blur Reduction where the strobe backlight flashes too early in the LCD scan-out.
UPDATE: This was done to decrease input lag by ~1-2ms with worse image quality. Fortunately, this becomes a user choice in V2 firmware with the Blur Busters Strobe Utility.

Amazon and BenQ have confirmed that all monitors sold by Amazon have been updated and have V2 firmware. Don't be scared to buy one from Amazon. Beware 3rd party sellers on Amazon you never know.

Q: Which Firmware Is My Monitor Using?

A: You may check the firmware version of your monitor by going into your monitor's service menu, by doing the following steps:
1. Turn off your monitor (tap POWER and then wait 5 seconds) if it is already on.
2. Cover the MENU touch button (4th touch button out of 5, excluding POWER button).
3. While covering MENU button with your finger, briefly tap the POWER button.
4. Nothing will happen for 3 seconds. Ignore this pause, keep covering MENU button.
5. Suddenly, all lights will flash simultaneously.
6. Release your finger off the MENU button.
7. Monitor will power up. Wait for the monitor to power on.
8.

Update 2: Amazon is now shipping units with V2 firmware, compatible with BlurBuster utility. This is no longer an issue.

Update 1: BlurBuster guy is writing a utility that may be able to correct for this.

The Z series features Motion Blur Reduction, which uses strobe backlighting to nearly completely eliminate motion blur in the same way that Lightboost does. The difference is that it is officially supported and not a 'hacky' workaround, and that it doesn't skew the colors as much.

However, the XL2720Z as well as XL2420Z both have a problem with the strobe backlighting at the moment, where the bottom half of the screen will get a faint double image when it is enabled.

From BlurBusters: "I just finally heard back from BENQ. They're leaning towards asking users to send to Service Centers to get the firmware upgraded." Google searches show it affects both the 2420Z and 2720Z.

See edit below.

First up, the main reason you would buy this monitor is the Blur Reduction tech. The monitor achieves this by strobing the backlight off during pixel transition. That way you only see full frames. This monitor has a timing bug where it is strobing at the wrong time. The top half of the monitor looks great, but the bottom half has a double image. It still looks better than a non-strobed monitor, but its clearly not right.

Other than the bug, the monitor also has really poor color reproduction. TN angle issues, dithering, etc, etc. The out of the box calibration is downright embarrassing. When I booted up for the first time I though my graphic driver had reset to 256 color mode. You'll want to find a ICC profile from someone with a color puck.

Even if you think color isn't important, I'd put a big wait on this monitor until the bug is fixed. Its not worth dealing with the color when the main feature isn't working right yet.

EDIT- As of 3/21 BENQ US is officially updating the firmware to allow you to adjust the strobe. This means the worst of the blur issue is adjustable. Glad to see Benq responding to this issue.

Has quality written all over it. It's a monitor from BenQ. Why not expect only professional quality?

Previously, I have owned an ASUS VG248QE 144hz gaming monitor before I laid eyes on this beauty. In comparison, to me, the XL2420Z BLOWS asus vg248QE out of the water in terms of visual comfort. Now, the color reproduction of this monitor is generally better than the asus. Pictures do not appear too grayish or washed out like on the asus. After calibrating the monitor colors, it closely matches colors of my 2nd HP 2009m monitor pretty well.

I have to say the Low Blue Light control is FANTASTIC in terms of making it easier to look at the screen with your eyes. I used the asus that was just insanely bright, even on 0 brightness. This monitor also has the zeroflicker technology, so no PWM annoyance!

During my first use of the monitor, I noticed that the "butter-like" smoothness of 144Hz isn't quite like the Asus VG248QE out of box. With the use of utilities and Lightboost for either monitor, you can make it match (or even better if you got this BenQ monitor using a Strobe utility). Make sure you get firmware V2 in order to use Strobe utility for this monitor!! Check Cons for info.

Cons:

- On my small desk that has low surface height but wide surface length, the monitor base still inches out a bit close to me like the asus, but not as much as the asus base, however
- CAME WITH FIRMWARE V1! I was hoping to get the new, upgraded V2 firmware... since it is May that I bought this and thought Amazon would only sell the V2 version. Some people get (Feb) models and some people get (Mar) models. The (Mar) models have V2 (as a previous reviewer has stated). As of May 20th, Amazon is still selling old inventory models of BenQ XL2420Z.
