From the Manufacturer

No other router lift has this kind of range, speed and accuracy! Speaking of accuracy, how's 0.001-Inch adjustment resolution with no need for a fussy and expensive digital readout? ProLift is the only lift on the market designed for demanding, daily use - no other lift matches our features. In fact, ProLift is the only direct-drive lift built around the robust Porter-Cable model 7518 router. Integral fins keep your router running cool. The direct-drive mechanism eliminates the complication and slop associated with belts, chains and gears. Don't settle for wimpy lifts that clog up with dust, bind, get sloppy and move at a snail's pace. Isn't it time you changed the way you change your bits?

I have used this router lifter at a friends house when my own router table set-up was inadequate for the task at hand. I have used several router tables and was under the impression that the Bench Dog set-up was the best. The cast iron table is as solid at it gets with the the added benefit of the ability to use magnetic feather "boards" as well as the standard types. The router lifter was fast and accurate and very solid. There was no question in my mind that when I up-graded my router table set up it would be to a Bench Dog.

My friend moved and took his router table with him so the opportunity to purchase a new router table set-up was at hand. After using many set-ups I considered my product research to be largely finished but took another look at Jessem and Woodpecker. It was a close call but my experience with the Bench Dog led me to bite the bullet and purchase the Bench Dog set-up.

The router table, stand and fence arrived in great shape considering the weight and I eagerly set it up. Despite the lack of instructions, it went together quickly and without any problems.

This is where the disappointment began. The Pro-lifter arrived and I noticed that it was different that what I expected and had used in the past. The steel inserts were replaced with ONE cheap plastic insert that must be attached with three very small screws. The top plate looks different as well. I knew that Rockler had purchased Bench Dog a few years ago but what I did not realize is that they decided to cheapen the product in such a way that it is now not the top of the line of router table set-ups in my opinion.

Two other friends purchased these units in the past year and received the model with the steel inserts so I assumed that I would as well.

Having been through 3 woodpecker lifts which would not hold their height, I finally upgraded to the bench dog lift. While the finish / appearance of the woodpecker was amazing, the finish on the Bench Dog lift is impressive and beautiful. The engineering is also of the extremely high quality you would expect of a tool of this price. It's higher weight vs. the aluminum lift dampens vibration. It's height locking mechanism which consists of a bolt lockdown on the acme thread crankshaft prevents even the slightest of height changes. The locking mechanism on my woodpecker lift was affected by the vibration on my trim cutting bit and would climb up and down wildly. No such problems with the bench dog lift. I recommend you skip the frustration (and believe me, it was extreme), and spring for this lift now. You will not regret it.

I purchased this lift about two weeks ago and have used it sparingly in the past few days. The overall construction is solid and the movement is smooth and accurate. Once the height is set and the lock screw is tightened, there is absolutely no movement.

The only disappointment is the cheezy reducing insert that surrounds the smaller bits. It is made out a thin piece of plastic that absolutely needs the three tiny screws installed when in use. Since I generally don't keep screwdrivers at the router station, it's just one more tool that I need to go fetch in order to change a bit. Not really that much of a problem at the moment because it got shredded the first time I didn't put the screws back in.

I plan to have a steel one machined as soon as I get the chance. If I'd been aware of this tidbit before purchasing it, I would have kept looking.

I cannot overstate the quality, ease of use, and accuracy of this router lift.

1) It's made here, not in China.
2) The construction is absolutely first rate.
3) Everything about it is extraordinarilly rugged, heck, the box it came in could be used as a jack stand.
4) The instructions were complete, accurate, and written by somebody that speaks English.
5) There were no missing parts.
6) It is very easy to use.
7) Assembly is essentially limited to inserting the router and adjusting the leveling screws on the table.
8) When you set the height it STAYS SET, no slipping during use.
9) I do not think it would be possible to break it with anything other than a sledge hammer or cutting torch.

Quite honestly I think this is the best lift on the market even though its not the most expensive. When I purchased this lift I also purchased the Bench Dog cast iron table saw extension wing router table to put it in-- another REALLY good product. The two combined, mounted on my saw, will be the center of my shop for decades.

This is my first router lift, so i can only offer an assessment rather than a comparison. when i found out that this lift was designed for the P-C 7518, i bought both. I have several P-C routers and have never had any problems with them, so the 7518 was an easy decision. It's powerful enough for large panel cutters, and i use the variable speed control frequently. Competing lifts from Kreg, Jess-em, etc. all seemed to receive good reviews but the fact that i already had the BenchDog cast iron router table, and compatibility with the 7518 made this a good choice. note that there are no spacers required for the 7518 - the lift is designed for it so it's a matter of sticking the 7518 motor in half way and tightening. note also that you don't need the 7518 base - just the motor. you can save yourself $50 or so if you order the motor and skip the base.

the unit is very well built. adjustment required after a few hours of use, and then it needs little care beyond annual cleaning and lubrication (which is a pain if you use this with the Rockler Dust Bucket as I do). if you get one of these, i recommend getting a 1/4" to 3/8" socket adapter (like the DeWalt 2542)so you can use your drill to raise and lower the unit. it comes with a small 3/8 speed wrench which is great for adjusting the cutter height, but the drill approach is much speedier for changing cutters.

All-in-all, the Bench Dog lift is a solid product. From what i can tell, it seems to be well designed. i recommend it.

One aside may be helpful to you: it is not possible to lift the collets high enough (at least it isn't on my PC7518) to get the wrench on the bottom collet nut far enough to hold it tight without damaging the top of the nut. You have to take the plate out.
