This is officially, the most read book in my library. Having read Vella's autobiographical account of his childhood, Hollow in the Woods, I looked forward to reading his novel. I was not disappointed. Though I have a hard copy of the book, I recently downloaded it and read it again. The first book paints a dark portrait of child abuse and its consequences, Park Benches paints a different portrait, a portrait of shadow and light: shadow in the character of Jack and the abusive world he represents, light in the characters of Eddie, Nancy, Sol, and the Old Man. The book is a book about choice and consequence, questions and answers. It begins with the simple question, "What is Love?" As Vella so eloquently states, answers to questions lie in other questions. It is through the questions Eddie asks himself and others the answer is revealed. I highly recommend this book..
