Benchmade Rift 950bk (non serated black blade)..work of art,
By Mystro (Pa.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Benchmade 950 Rift Osborne Design Knife Satin Blade (Grey/ Black handle) (Sports)
Benchmade 950bk Rift. This is the black non serrated blade with the two tone charcoal/black handle. I knew this was a sharp looking knife but honestly the pics dont do the Rift justice. This knife is a work of art. Blade lock up is rock solid with absolutely no play. The knife action comes a bit stiff right out of the box but a bit of gun oil and working the action in front of the hi-def transforms it into lightning fast opening and closing. This is a very easy task to do because the Rift is one of those knives you want to handle and fondle just because it feels so good in the hand. The G10 two tone charcoal/black handle is rough in all the right places to give it a no slip grip in the wet but smooth under the pocket clip to not tear up your pants. Benchmade was thinking with this design and it shows across the entire knife. I took the knife apart to see how everything works and it was easy and enjoyable. The pillar construction will be great in the woods field dressing deer. The 154cm blade is shaving sharp. This knife immediately became my favorite knife in my collection.

Like the title says the pic is wrong and the description is lacking key information. This knife has the charcoal/black handle, satin colored blade, and plain edge. Now that that is all cleared up.... The overall quality of the knife is great which can and should be expected from a company like Benchmade. It is not as sharp as some of my other knives but is more than enough for most cutting chores. The pocket clip is good not too tight not too loose. The blade takes some repeated opening and closing before gets broken in to the point you can flick it out with almost no effort. The axis lock feels solid and is easy to operate. I own many other knives and this was my first Benchmade..... it will not be my last. Overall I would recommend this knife especially at this price.

I just purchased the Benchmade 950 Rift and I love it. It is a great knife. It is the first one in a while that I have purchased that has not have a black combo edge and I have to say I really like the look of it. The reverse tanto is very nice providing a lot of cutting edge where it is needed across the front of the blade with a nice up-swept curve. The knife is rock solid. The G10 scales make for a great grip and the steel liners contribute to the overall rigidity and feeling of quality. The knife is fast to open as the thumb stud is perfectly position for a rapid flick opening. I think these axis knives are faster than automatics. When I bought this knife it was $103.00 making it to good to pass up. Amazon raised the price the same week but it is still a great knife. I would not hesitate to buy use and carry this knife.

The Benchmade 950 knife is fine, but what Amazon sent to me when I ordered this was NOT a new Benchmade 950 as is advertised.
First, and most importantly, the blade that arrived is probably a knock-off instead of a real Benchmade knife. It was delivered without the well-knowqn Benchmade box, booklet, or other material. It was just a knife shoved in a little plastic baggie; certainly not what I'd call a "new" or "unopened" product. The blade itself has the Benchmade and Osborne stamps on it, but I strongly suspect this is a fake. The quality of both the blade and the handle is horrible; far below what you'd expect from even the cheapest low-end benchmades; much less a high-end one with the Osborne stamp! The handle has burs, rough-patches, and left-over material all over it. The blade itself is visibly lop-sided!! The swedge is cut deeper on one side than the other, so the two sides of the swedge don't even meet at the same spot on the spine of the blade at all. The cutting edge of the blade is pretty even, but it is not at all sharp (Benchmades are usually very sharp right out of the box). The blade deploys poorly (it sticks and doesn't open smoothly at all), and when open the blade wiggles from side-to-side. The delivered knife is also not of the same type as is advertised here on amazon. It is not a satin finish plain edge blade, instead this one has a black coated blade with a combo (partially serrated) edge; which would match the description of a Benchmade 950SBK, but not the 950 --if you assumed it were a real Benchmade in the first place. If this is a real benchmade, it is the worst quality I've ever seen from the company. But even if you assume it is real, it is still not a "new" product, nor is it the advertised satin finish blade.

Beautiful Knife,
This review is from: Benchmade 950 Rift Osborne Design Knife Satin Blade (Grey/ Black handle) (Sports)
The 950 rift I got is without serration and black coating. The knife's major specialty is that it looks beautiful. The Knife is in great quality with only two little problems: the first is that the handle is very edgy and causes some pain when gripping it very tight. The second is that action is not truly smooth when you got it, requiring you to oil it your self. The blade is sharp enough out of the box, and I highly recommend it for people that are looking for a big sized blade.

As the other reviewers have noted, this Rift 950 (plain blade,gr/char handle) is a solid work of art. It's built like a tank, awesome to look at and wont be confused with any of your other knives. The only problem is that it wont open as easily as my other axis-lock Benchmades. I have four other knives where, through adjustment of the axis screw and a little lube, the blades swing feely but lock up rock solid and have absolutely no play in the blade. This 950 will not. If the screw is loosened enough so the blade swings freely, there is blade play. When tightened to where there is no blade play, the blade encounters enough friction to make thumbstud opening difficult. This may sound picky, but it is not up to Benchmade's standards (which their prices reflect). My other knives (707,710D, 930, 940) open as easily and as fast as an automatic, and will close using only the weight of the blade. Since this ease of use is why my last 4 knife purchases where Benchmade, the Rift is a disappointment. It is pretty though...

First off, the knife does not have the black coating like it shows in the picture. I just got this knife so I cant give a coment on the test of time. The fit and finish are perfect. The lock-up is solid. The blade came razor sharp. The knife has a little heft to it but not too much. It rides very comfortably compared to my other knives of the same size. It fits very comfortably in my hand. I like the axis lock. I realy dont have anything bad to say about this knife at this time. I paid 108.00 for the knife which is a steal because I have not found them anywhere else for under 155.00. Great knife at a great price.

It is a really great knife and I like it. After use the knife comes out faster and smoother. The blade retains its edge well.

It's a Benchmade! Comfortable handle, unique design so it will not get "confused" with others. Serrated blade is a must have. Fits well on the pocket edge and the reverse tanto is the most versatile of blades in my opinion. It dosen't spring out as well as the griptillian or the Kershaw but this knife is way more solid and holds an edge like you would expect of a quality piece equipment.
