The Emissary can best be described as "semi-auto" as it is spring-assisted (two springs, one for the Axis lock and one for the blade pivot) but it deploys smoother than most automatics I have handled.
This is not a hard use knife for taking on a camping or hunting trip. The Emissary is an urban knife all the way, from its look to its feel to its deployment and locking mechanisms.
In all I love this knife and it is destined to become a classic as I doubt Benchmade will keep it in production. I hope I'm wrong, but most of my favorite Warren Osborne designed Benchmades have been discontinued. So if you're on the fence, I wouldn't wait too long, or you might miss out on one of the more advanced and stylish knives Benchmade has produced.
A beautiful design and flawless in its execution, Benchmade made a Gentlemen's knife that few if any could match for the price. Maybe out of the price range for some, but if you want a pocket knife you can pass down to your kids, this would be the one. Benchmade's LifeSharp program will help you keep this knife maintained for many years to come.
The Emissary is a small knife, but entirely appropriate as a "business EDC" - the dark gray matte coating (darker than I thought it looked online) and slim profile ensure a very subtle appearance on belt or pocket in an office or corporate style environment.
It comes as a tip-up carry, which I prefer and has an easily-disengaged safety lock on the blade - I'm not usually a huge fan of safety locks but I just managed to put a hole in my hand taking a SOG Spec Elite Mini off my belt recently (the thumb stud caught on the lower edge of the belt, opening the knife!) and have had problems with a SOG Visionary opening itself when clipped to a belt. So, let's say I'm gaining a new appreciation for them.
Deployment is very smooth with a nice spring assist. Disengaging the Axis lock is a bit creaky for now but I'm 99% sure this will get smoother with time.
The blade comes razor sharp. I haven't tried to sharpen it yet (I use the Edge Pro sharpening system), but would be tempted to send it back to Benchmade, at least the first time, to see how their LifeSharp system works.
Very happy with it - I suspect I'll be getting more Benchmade knives. The additional premium you pay for the Benchmade knives over some of the other comparable brands seems to be worth it when you see the workmanship and quality in the product.

I bought this knife and a Gerber Outrigger. The knives are very similar in weight, size and functionality. When the Gerber blade is out and locked there is no wiggle. Read morePublished 5 months ago by Tim

The knife if well made and holds and edge well. Nice weight and balance, blade opens fast. I have other "prettier" Benchmade knives but this one is a workhorse. Read morePublished 22 months ago by dc1360
