Product Description

The Benchmade 5000 has a 154-CM satin finish BK1-Coated ComboEdge blade. The black anodized, machined 6061 T-6 aluminum handle features milled ribs that add gripability to the already contoured handle. The AXIS lock system makes the knife easier (and faster) to open and close. 420J stainless steel liners and a reversible steel carry-clip which can be reversed for right or left handers. It’s an unbeatable duplicate of the Benchmade automatic Model 5000 Auto AXIS, but in a Manual version! BK1 coating provides excellent corrosion protection, which exceeds the ASTM-117 spec for saltwater while possessing higher scratch resistance.

The best knife I've ever owned.
dfromg
It has some roughness to the handle, which helps to grip even in wet or slippery conditions.
Deltoidz
It opens conveniently and is well balanced.

This knife was sent to me in Iraq. It survived two tours in the marine infantry and has cut everything; plastic, rope, wood... It came with a great edge as do all benchmades but it is very hard to find anyone that can bring it back to its original edge. It is very heavy for a knife which is one of the reasons that I like it and the handle is large enough that it will not slip out of your had when wet or bloody. The ribs on the handle add to the grip but they do a good job of eating through your cloths if you have it clipped to you. I have worn this everyday for four years and use it for everything, this knife was made to last.

I was given this knife as a gift and later picked up the automatic version of it as well. Turns out I prefer this version over the automatic. I have been using it for just over three years now.

Knife body is all metal construction and extremely solid. Fits very well in hand, curvature of the body molds to the palm and the flairs/grooves before the blade provide excellent grip and security in hand while using it. The ergonomics are equally excellent when you hold the knife backwards and take the more aggressive reverse grip.

Legendary Benchmade locking mechanism, equally easy to open and close the knife with one hand. No problem. You cannot close the automatic version with one hand, which is why I prefer this one.

I periodically apply a dab of gun oil to the locking mechanism and blade pivot to keep them smooth. I can give a good push on the thumb tab of the blade and it will fling into locked, open position. That's how smooth the mechanism is (and why an automatic version of this knife is not really necessary).

The blade is a little shorter and little thinner than I would ideally like, but I have never had an issue with it in application.

Benchmade service is excellent. I had another Benchmade that had the clip break off; mailed it with a $5 check for shipping back to BM and they replaced the clip, sharpened the blade, cleaned the knife and had it back to me within a week. I have not yet needed to send this one in for anything though.

When my son came back from Afghanistan he brought me his Auto Axis as a gift. I really like its smooth operation and 'meaty' feel in my hand. I'm more of a hand-gun guy, but this knife is an excellent self-defense piece of equipment. A real masterpiece of workmanship. I will always treasure it. The best knife I've ever owned.

Wow, it is defiantly true when they say " You get what you pay for" This knife's quality workmanship is obvious as soon as you take it out of the box. I have carried it with me while on patrol since I received it and it has met my expectations.

I own the auto version of this and will be buying this version soon! I just ordered a griptilian and am slapping myself for not buying this instead. The reason why is because I'm now a vet/civilian, when I was in the Army this knife was legal to have on me, during work, etc. Now, if I actually have to use a knife in self defense, etc..I will be screwed with an automatic knife. Even though the automatic version of this is the best knife I've ever owned in my life I have to accept the fact it's now illegal. Not only that, if I was to get pulled over and searched, and had the automatic knife on me, and the LEO recognized it as automatic, it would be confiscated from me :(. I highly suggest buying this knife, if you want a good evenly distributed weighted knife that is ambidextrous for us lefties!

So, i'm a cyclist. i find a lot of things when i ride. cell phones, tools, toys, money, credit cards, check books, drivers licenses(yes, plural), cd's, wallets even. the other day, i rolled across this knife. tossed it in my pocket, and rode on. got home, realized, hmm, this is a pretty sweet knife. it has obviously seen a lot of work and been run over by a truck or three. still works. a little sticky at times, but i have yet to clean it. i'll post a pic in a bit, but the black finish is quite work i'm guessing from a sharpening. but, i'm not complaining.

A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Only negative I can see, which isn't all that bad, is it will chew up your trousers if you happen to keep it stored in your rear pocket as I do on patrol. Other than that, it's ultra sharp and ergonomics are spot on.

This is the sharpest knife I've ever owned. It opens conveniently and is well balanced. You have to be careful if you're not us to having a really sharp knife. Just touching the tip or the blade can cut you.
