A User's Review of the Benchmade 556-YEL,

This review is from: Benchmade Pardue Design Axis Mini-Griptilian Knife Drop-Point with Ambidexterous Thumb Studs (Yellow) (Sports)
I use this knife everyday for cutting tasks. It performs flawlessly and is very easy to resharpen. The design of the blade is perfect for cutting tasks and because of the large belly it is easy to spread the cutting workload over the entire blade edge, helping to maintain the cutting edge.
The lockup is fantastic! It is a one handed operation to deploy and close the blade. This knife is so well made that it responds like a spring assisted knife without the risk of it opening by accident in your pocket. I dislike knives with a safety and almost all the assisted openers have them. Imagine trying to deploy the blade in an emergency only to realize that a safety is engaged. I don't need that in my life. I selected yellow because I use this knife in the public view almost every day. Yellow signifies safety. Yellow = Safety is psychologically very affective. I have never had to deal with negative feedback from the public. * Blade Material: 154CM steel, the only steel I can make sharper than this steel is D2 steel (good edge retention, easy to sharpen, corrosion resistant} * Blade Bushings: The blade does not ride on the liners. It is separated by a brass/copper bushing on each side, that helps it open effortlessly. * Cam: The blade will not open by accident in your pocket. It has a cam that keeps it in the closed position which takes little effort to overcome when you are ready to deploy the knife blade. * Thumb Studs: Deployment of the blade is easy due to the ambidextrous thumb studs on each side of the blade. This knife is as fast as an auto knife. * Scales: Made of Valox® which is a thermoplastic polyester resin. * Gimping and Retention Patterning: The scales have a diamond pattern that is very secure in your hand. The gimping is also very aggressive. The gimping is not only in the grip but in the steel liner also. Once your hand is secured around the scales, it is not going to move. * Liners: Made of 420J Steel, these make the knife very strong. * AxisLock: Very Secure. This is my favorite locking system ever made. (more info on the AxisLock below} * Pocket Clip: Standard Benchmade (very secure in the pocket) The AxisLock is designed to move a locking bar behind the blade when it is fully deployed. The design insures that the blade can not be closed by accident. When pressure is put on the back of the blade without the AxisLock being retracted, it pushes the locking bar further into the blade. You would have to apply enough pressure to either break the locking bar or tear the liners to get it to close without retracting the AxisLock. Dislikes: I really do not have any. When I was contemplating purchasing this knife, I though it was too thick. But once I started using this knife, I realized my concerns were unfounded. I was also concerned about the yellow color. I wasn't sure if the psychological affect would actually work. The fact is it does and I am glade I went with the yellow. My last EDC was even smaller than the Benchmade 556 YEL, had no thumb studs and needed two hands to open. I would get gasps when I deployed it in the presents of others because of the black scales. There has never been a concern by anyone with the yellow handled 556. The Benchmade 556-YEL is so light and sized right for the pocket that I do not use the pocket clip anymore. I carry a large folder with a pocket clip and carry my yellow Benchmade EDC in the bottom of my pocket. By the way, my large pocket knife is also a Benchmade (710) because I like the AxisLock so much. Details from Benchmade's website: Blade Length: 2.91" Blade Thickness: 0.100" Handle Thickness: 0.510" Blade Material: 154CM Stainless Steel Blade Hardness: 58-60HRC Blade Style: Modified Drop-Point; Ambidextrous Thumb-Studs Weight: 2.56oz. Pocket Clip: Black, Reversible, Tip-Up Lock Mechanism: AXIS Overall Length: 6.78" Closed Length: 3.87" I hope this helps you in your decision process. This review is from: Benchmade Pardue Design Axis Mini-Griptilian Knife Drop-Point with Ambidexterous Thumb Studs (Yellow) (Sports)
Benchmade- an American standard in knife quality. I will agree.
I ordered this knife as a gift for my girl- she mentioned a few times she wanted a good knife so only the best will do right? Gotthe yellow and like the color. The blade is fantastic; I like the Pardue Design and the 154cm steel seems great (reviews of it say great steel for $) The clip is stout and I feel won't bend easily. The ergos, for her quite small hands, will be fantastic. So a list of pros and cons: PROS: +ergos great (small to med hands) +ambidextrous (even the clip) +axis lock pretty good +blade steel +blade design +color choices CONS: -Very hard plastic handle, not grippy material (good grip b/c of design though) -not very "flickable" -could be a lower profile clip (not a big deal) -handle fit and finish could be a bit better (I'm super picky though) -benchmade, listen to nutnfancy, just a little sharper out-of-box please
