Benchmark are absolutely the best road atlases out there. I have the AZ, UT, OR, and CA maps that I have purchased for trips (I use my CA one all the time, but I live here) and find them invaluable. I can always find my way when lost, and they really do a great job of showing detail that you wouldn't expect, even in metro areas. They show the most random and remote Forest Service or BLM roads, and points of interest on those roads that you would otherwise need specialty maps to see. If there's a dirt road or otherwise going there, these maps show it. Highly recommended!

If you are going to do much traveling in the more rural areas of Oregon, then this Atlas is almost a necessity. I had the 1998 edition and just purchased this one (2006) to help with our travels this summer. I have found it to be accurate and it has almost all of the roads that are available to a modern automobile - it might keep a person from getting lost and it certainly helps if you are planning a trip into an area with which you are not too familiar.

I purchased both the Oregon Benchmark edition and the Oregon Atlas and Gazatteer edition on Amazon.com. The Benchmark one has considerably less detail than the second one I ordered. Often roads in the Benchmark edition are not named, and having traveled in the central part of Oregon, that can present problems. Personally I prefer the detail that the Oregon Atlas/Gazatteer (by Delorme) has to offer. This is not to say the Benchmark edition isn't helpful -- but having both to look through, I find the Delorme Atlas better suits my needs for more complete detail.

The Benchmark map for Oregon beats the DeLorme series hands down. It is especially useful for the recreational user needing detailed information on road quality of minor backwoods roads. Contour/elevation/terrain information approaches the accuracy of USGS topographic maps.
The information on recreational sites (campgrounds, etc.) is good but one should still check with the local USFS/BLM station on whether the facility is open and what the current regulation are in effect for it.

We have used these atlases for route planning, outdoor recreation site location, and general reference throughout the West. They're accurate, easy to read, and a great source.

I have purchased both the Washington and Oregon Benchmark Road & Recreation Atlas. These are indispensable if you are going to new places that are off an Interstate Highway. The level of detail is perfect for any outdoors person. Shown are virtually every public campground, forest road, river, stream, and boat launch, and even towns with populations of 50 and less. The editors thought the atlas through so that ANYONE can use it immediately upon receipt. I will never go back to folding maps. An excellent resource for any level of traveling!

I ride a cruiser style motorcycle and I am always looking to travel the back roads while staying off the dirt ones. This map is the best for determining when the asphalt runs out and the gravel/dirt road begins. You would be amazed on how many new paved routes "through the back country" you can find using Benchmark state maps. So far I have four state maps and I'm looking to buy several more

Sorry; but I am unable to give a review of this product. I keep getting a confirmation that I should have received the product, but my account was credited for the full amount, and the due date is past. I take it that it was out of stock; but there was never any confirmation directly telling me such. I reorderd another map book and will review it if I receive it. Otherwise I thank you; b;ut I feel you could be more informative other than just giving me my refund.-----Merle Simmons

Benchmark Maps,

Once again I have purchased a "Road and Recreation Atlas" and found little or no mine locations. My recreation is prospecting/metal detecting and rockhounding and while the contents state "mines" they are few and far between if at all. Are they trying to tell me there was very little mining in Oregon or that I should choose a new hobby because they don't classify mine as a "recreation". I think they are just trying to say that their maps are just not accurate enough or their "Field Checkers" (oxymoron if I've ever heard one) are so lazy or dumb, they can't locate a mine with a GPS? All me and a few other amateur explorers are asking for is a general location of mines, and we don't expect it to be spot on. That would enable us to plan a little bit and hopefully not get lost doing it. If it says "mine location" then it should show them. DeLorme does on most of their Atlas and Gazetteer's so why can't Benchmark?~desertdan
