Book Description

October 1994
The particular emphasis of this book is on "quality" as expressed in active, growing churches around the country. It establishes the standards of quality that congregations must seek to achieve. It illustrates processes that manifest quality in churches through a continuous hypothetical narrative that takes place in a church board. Charts, diagrams, statistics, and "quality jargon" are kept to a minimum.  This book is part of an overall product extension of the Shawchuck Marketing/Leading/Managing trilogy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some useful information, February 20, 2010

This review is from: Benchmarks of Quality in the Church: 21 Ways to Continuously Improve the Content of Your Ministry (Paperback)
I have no problem with the church seeking quality. Every other institution inur day is seeking quality so they can compete. Somehow the thought rings unfamiliarly on my thoughts about the church - I always thought we should be doing the best we can - never thought of calling it quality.

I am reminded again why I don't particularly care for the type of book - 21 ways, 10 waya, 12 ways etc.

However there is some useful information in the book even though it is tied very closely to business practices and I never thought of the church particularly as a business.

J. Robert Ewbank, author of "John Wesley, Natural Man, and the 'Isms'"

4.0 out of 5 stars dated but still useful, April 19, 2008

This review is from: Benchmarks of Quality in the Church: 21 Ways to Continuously Improve the Content of Your Ministry (Paperback)
The concepts of "quality" used in this book were current in the business world at the time it was written, but are showing their age. Nevertheless, the underlying ideas continue to be useful. The identifiers of quality may need to be modified in your setting depending on theological and other priorities. (and theologically, I have a problem with using the word "quality" at all, but can easily ignore that to find the value in this book.) The underlying premise- that there are things we can do to increase people's engagement in the ministries of their church- continues to be a useful one in these years of generational transition for churches.
