Benedito Lacerda/Various Artists"Bene, O Flautista" (Maritaca, 2008) -------------------------------------------- This is a truly stunning 4-CD set covering the career of Brazilian flautist Bendito Lacerda, one of the finest players in the jazz-like "choro" genre. Gathered here are dozens of historical recordings from the 1930s, '40s, and '50s, including immortal (and amazing!) duets with saxophonist Pixinguinha, as well as numerous examples of Lacerda backing star vocalists of the golden era of samba-songs, such as the great Carmen Miranda, when she still lived and recorded in Brazil. If you have any interest in classic Brazilian music, and choro in particular, this collection is a must-have. I've listened to a lot of Brazilian music and few records are its equal: it's wonderful, joyous music with superb performances and a great zest in every solo. I can put this collection on -- all four discs at once -- and listen to it nonstop for hours and hours and never want to stop. Really. It's that good.
