Alton Gansky (www.altongansky.com) has written a number of other novels, including Zero-G, Finder's Fee, Director's Cut, Before Another Dies, The Prodigy, and the J. D. Stanton mystery series. He also writes nonfiction books that explore the mysteries of faith, the Bible, and God. He and his wife, Becky, have three adult children and live in Southern California.

If you've read Gansky before, you know he has a great imagination and the ability to tell a gripping story. This, however, is Gansky at a whole new level.When Perry Sachs, engineer/archaelogist, takes a team to Antartica, he discovers secrets beyond his initial expectations. Although he is aware of something lurking beneath the ice, he is unaware of its full impact or of the forces intent upon reaching it. Soon, Sachs and his team are hostages in a deadly game--hostage to the elements, to the evil of a secretive society, and to the truth of a artifact hidden for thousands of years. "Beneath the Ice" conveys the same realistic atmosphere of classic thrillers such as Alistair MacLean's "Ice Station Zebra," while mixing in the bizarre twists of Dan Brown's "The DaVinci Code," and Jeff Long's "Year Zero." Gansky employs minimal, but believable, character development. His climax fails to serve justice in any fashion to the antagonists, but the book still ranks easily as one of the best Christian thrillers out there.

Even I was surprised at how good Beneath the Ice was, and I'm a great fan of all Gansky's novels. I've read a lot of arctic adventure stories--this is right at the top. Some avid readers of techno-thrillers who like authors like Rollins or Reilly, don't give Gansky a try because he is a minister who weaves Christianity through his books. This is a shame, because he tells a great story with plenty of technical detail, great characterization, and a compelling plot. As a Catholic, I think the Christian aspect of his writing is a big plus...but I still think his books are for anyone and everyone. The character of Perry Sachs is a winner. I hope Gansky writes more of these, and expect that he will. Beneath the ice just might be Gansky's best book. The action never stops...there are no loose ends...the ending is very satisfying. What more could you want?

Alton introduced the character of Perry Sachs in "A Treasure Deep", one of his best novels. Now Perry returns with another excavation--but this time the climate isn't quite as cooperative! Something has been found under the Antartic ice, and it could mean trouble! Just like "Treasure", the mystery continues to unfold about what's down there until they reach it. Again, we see the clues that keep us off balance and unsure of what they've truly found until well into the book. The elements for a great story are here, and I welcome the return of Perry Sachs and his crew. There is the added element of a possible assassin being in the group. This is used to build a good amount of tension, and I liked the way the suspicion flowed around them. The action starts strong and really never slows down. Every time you think you can relax, something unexpected happens. This one moves along at a better pace than his last novel. I hope we see Perry and his crew return soon. My advice: drop the JD Stanton series for a little while and do more stories with Perry. Better yet, have them meet up and put them both in one novel. What a story that would be! Pick this one up. You'll enjoy it. Recommended.
