Book Description

Iowa Short Fiction Award October 1, 2004

The stories in Merrill Feitell’s award-winning collection, Here Beneath Low-Flying Planes, examine the fleeting and unexpected moments of human connection, reminding us of the indelible impact we have on one another no matter how insignificant or anonymous we might feel under our huge, collective sky.

Feitell’s characters deal with shifting dynamics in relationships—whether they be best friends, lovers, family, or even strangers—that consistently leave them torn between two places or commitments. In the title story, Janie has undergone a painful childbirth experience and her group of friends must pioneer new dynamics while she wonders how to bring her old self back. In “Bike New York!” amid thirty thousand cyclists, a man on the brink of marriage meets a young girl who, in a tiny Brooklyn bakery, affirms both who he has been and who he is going to be. On this short detour from normal life he comes to understand “the funny thing about finding your way in the world. There was a place laid out for you . . . and even as you stepped into it, happy for the chance to rest, you wondered how you ever ended up there.”

Funny, big-hearted, and deft, Here Beneath Low-Flying Planes navigates the reader through the life that happens when you’re planning other things. It is a collection of experiences, roads not taken, and the intense and unforeseen sparks of connection we hope for.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Feitell chronicles impulsive life decisions, crucial moments of self-reflection, lost loves and intimate connections in her skillful debut, winner of the Iowa Short Fiction award. In "Bike New York!" an uncertain groom-to-be half-mistakenly flakes on his friends' planned bike-a-thon/pub crawl/bachelor party, only to find himself peddling along with a teenage girl whose hopeful youth sparks a "shift in lighting, a re-alignment of compositions as he slipped from the point of focus in his own life." In the poignant "The Marrying Kind," a woman on the eve of her 33rd birthday endures the nuptials of her college love—who also happens to be the father of her unborn child. The gem here is the delightful "Our Little Lone Star," in which a slightly neurotic 62-year-old woman's encounter with "some kind of cowboy" inspires her to stop living a life of regret. There are some slight missteps: the familiar Thanksgiving meet-the-parents theme and a few heavy-handed metaphors weaken "It Couldn't Be More Beautiful," while "Such a Big Mr. England" relies too heavily on its frame of Princess Diana's death at the cost of developing more fully the character of a memorabilia collector watching his son slip away to a cold daughter-in-law. But the collection as a whole boasts confident, astute prose as Feitell explores life's surprising moments with generosity and truth.

From Booklist

In this year's Iowa Short Fiction Award-winning collection, Feitell traces the orbits of people in transition. In the bittersweet "The Marrying Kind," a woman attends the wedding of her former lover and father of her unborn child as he marries someone else. In "Bike New York!" a young professional notes the passing of his bachelorhood shortly before his wedding. Although these more obvious shifts occur at a traditional milestone (marriage), Feitell also offers transitions of a subtler nature. "It Couldn't Be More Beautiful" illustrates the pain experienced by a 14-year-old girl as she loses the singular attention of her cherished older sister, who has gone away to college. And a New Jersey housewife's road trip through Texas to visit her daughter is the beginning of her inner journey to a more courageous life in "Our Little Lone Star." Feitell's characters all possess the awareness that they are experiencing change, whether loss or attainment, and the author's fidelity to her characters' emotions in their moments of passage-- and her glimmering prose--defines this insightful collection. 5.0 out of 5 stars how does she do it?, November 5, 2004
This review is from: Here Beneath Low-Flying Planes (Iowa Short Fiction Award) (Paperback)
Each of the stories in this collection are rueful, clever, energetic and big-hearted. Feitell's prose is a revelation-- finding humor in the bittersweet details, the essential stuff of life. I know that the brave and conflicted characters who populate these pages will stay with me. This is a true gem of a book.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Collection, August 6, 2007
By
This review is from: Here Beneath Low-Flying Planes (Iowa Short Fiction Award) (Paperback)
The Publisher's Weekly summary of this book is right on target: most of these stories are poignant depictions of characters in search of love and acceptance. Feitell does a good job of sketching familiar character types in literary fiction: men and women in their late twenties or early thirties with vague commitment problems and a lingering feeling of missing out on what makes life special. Only one of the stories doesn't work: Such a Big Mr. England is actually an unlikeable story, and should have been left out of the collection. Otherwise, Feitell provides thoughtful and well-crafted pieces. This collection works best if you take a break between reading the stories, as the similiaries in theme and language make the stories blend together if you read them in one or two sittings. The best way to approach this book is one story at a time, and allow a few days between stories. Fans of literary fiction won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection, September 2, 2008

This review is from: Here Beneath Low-Flying Planes (Iowa Short Fiction Award) (Paperback)
One of the best prize-winning collections I've read. I picked up this book about 4 years ago and still have the stories stuck in my head. They are very smart and cleverly written, and after revisiting them, I am even more amazed at their power. If you are a fan of modern short fiction, about mostly urban characters, you will really enjoy this collection. So many fresh moments in here - lines that just stick in your head. Feitell is a great writer and I hope to see a lot more of her books in the future.
