Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Few folk singers have covered as many miles as Bill Staines and on Beneath Some Lucky Star he pays tribute to his life in music and those he has met along the way in his more than 45 years on the road. The record is full of Staines signature sing-along melodies and tunes heavily inspired by the Atlantic seaside where he grew up with original ballads of epic journeys ( Salt Air, Lord Franklin, Lightship ) and everyday story songs of love and loss ( The Road to Rustico, The French Girl, Ceremony ).

A folk legend like Bill Staines is rare these days, but fans will agree that we are the lucky ones to have the true troubadours like Bill Staines out there singing songs that move and inspire us.

Review

"Staines is one of the best songwriters in folk music today" --Associated Press

"Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody left off - carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew." --Nanci Griffith

We have seen Bill Staines a number of times and have all his albums; he is the only singer song writer (I hate to call him that!) who consistently writes and sings
great songs that have made a real contribution to folk music.

This is Bill's first new CD in five years and it's one of his best. At 65, he's looking back on his life in music and ahead to the time when the music will inevitably end. "If I Come to Need an Angel" and "Along the Road" are especially poignant meditations from the winter of a life dedicated to creating beautiful songs that capture timeless themes. The wonder of nature, the healing power of love, the whispers of spirit, light in the darkness, all classic Staines motifs, are here in songs that make you want to sing along. The music of Bill Staines has fed my heart for thirty years, and this new offering does not disappoint. The man deserves a special place in heaven.

In my opinion Bill Staines is the finest writer of folk songs we have produced. Furthermore, unlike Bob Dylan (another of my favorites) he has a great voice. I have heard him in person several times and have all of his recordings. Like the others, "Beneath Some Lucky Stars" is an excellent buy! I would recommend it unconditionally..
