4.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate love
First let me say that I love this author! Marie Rochelle is totally awesome! The story of Rynne and Pierce is touching. Without giving to much away I will say that Pierce has suffered physical and mental scars from a crazy relationship gone bad. Becoming a recluse, Pierce hides from an unfriendly town. Rynne, who is a chemist who makes a scar correcting face cream, starts...

3.0 out of 5 stars Had potential
The most negative part about this book is the mediocre writing style. The book had a great plot and could have had great characters. The writing seems a bit rush and not very deep at all. Pierce came off as being a little wimpy and Rynne was constantly running away in a hissyfit. The tortured hero and the insecurities involving Pierce's scar was real enough and Rynne's...

Rynne, who is a chemist who makes a scar correcting face cream, starts drawing Pierce out and showing him what life is about. But what happens when Rynne hides her job title and it comes out in a bad way? Or when Pierce's sister does not accept her because of her race? You will just have to read the book. It's good!

3.0 out of 5 stars Had potential, February 8, 2010
This review is from: Beneath the Surface (Paperback)
The most negative part about this book is the mediocre writing style. The book had a great plot and could have had great characters. The writing seems a bit rush and not very deep at all. Pierce came off as being a little wimpy and Rynne was constantly running away in a hissyfit. The tortured hero and the insecurities involving Pierce's scar was real enough and Rynne's reaction to them was sweet enough... but other than that the book was pretty average. Kinda "meh..."

The best part about the book was how it dealt with race issues. People like Pierce's sister really do exist.

BUT I do find it a bit hard to believe that people will treat someone with a little facial scar so badly, bad enough to force them out of town.

Beside's the poorly constructed (and embarrassing!) cover, the book was like purgatory. Not bad.... Not really good...but not bad.

If the author took a bit more time in building up characters and the plot, the book could have been great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Story, May 3, 2009

I agree this was a good story. Pierce was forced to become a hermit because of disfiguring scars he received from an accident. Rynne was a chemist who created a cream that could fade his scars and allow him to live his life normally again. They meet and Rynne pushes a friendship that turns into love.
The problem: Rynne's brother doesn't like Pierce mainly because of his scars. Pierce's sister is a hateful racist witch, who will do just about anything to get Rynne out of her brother's life. Rynne doesn't want Pierce to know her true identity for fear that Pierce will reject her. Pierce has physical scars that are easy to see. Rynne has emotional scars from the past, that aren't easily seen and are even harder to heal. Will their love for each other heal their scars?
This was a really good story, but the editing was so bad I found myself circling the errors with a pencil. This book could have received 5 stars, but because of the poor editing it gets 3.5 stars. Regardless, Marie Rochelle is growing on me as a author and I will definitely read more of her books.

Because of my previous selections in the past in Amazon, Marie Rochelle's books have been added to my recommendations. I have become a big fan after purchasing and reading her books. This was a great love story about compassion and not judging people by their outside appearances. This story about Rynne and Pierce is a great example of the statement that beauty is in eye of the beholder. She saw the man beneath the scars and he saw the beauty inside and not just her skin color. I gave this book 4.5 stars only because I wanted to know more about why Rynne's parents favored her brother Byron over her and why Pierce's sister was so against him loving a black woman. This was a great interracial love story though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story!, July 5, 2009

I loved the story, but there were lots of grammatical errors. I also wish we were privy to more conversation between Rynne and Pierce. Conversations that we never read were referred to later in the novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be good, January 22, 2010
This could be a good read except that the errors were really overwhelming. I liked that it was romantic but I found it boring at times and rather redundant.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Purchase, November 4, 2011

I never write reviews for products but this book was so horrible I felt it was necessary to warn others. The main girl is BIPOLAR. She jumps from one emotion to the next and gets mad at him for no reason. One part in the book, he asks her to not go iinto hid house and she freaks out and runs away. Every 5 mins she is freaking out saying how independent she is and no man will own her. And the mysterious man who hurt her was just thrown into the middle of the book and the mystery behind the man was never really solved (I.e. who was this guy). Do not buy! This book is horrible.

2.0 out of 5 stars Skipped Chapters and Didn't Miss Anything, July 21, 2011

I found the book to be way to long for it not to go anywhere. The main charater was annoying. I agree with another reader about being bi-polar. She had way to many issues, and the fact that the two would argue and then run into each others arms, was tiring. It had potential to be a really good story. It's sad when you can skip five chapters and not miss anything important.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, very touching, June 11, 2011
This book was good. I enjoyed the story line. I will agree that the needs to be edited. However, if you can get over that and get into the story, it was very good. The love between the Rynne and Pierce was very sweet and hot. Good read! :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, January 10, 2011

I found this to be the worst book I have ever read. The spelling mistakes and the angry black women kept me from enjoying the story line.
