This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Zebra Historical Romance) (Paperback)
Her first novel, BENEATH THE TEXAS SKY, published in 1988, won both Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice for Best Western Romance of 1988 and the National Press Women's novel of the year by a woman in its category. Now Zebra reissues BENEATH THE TEXAS SKY with a new cover.

In 1865 Texas, redhead Bethanie Lane can no longer avoid the lecherous advances of her uncle whom also treats her as an unpaid servant. Her mother's dead and her father left before she was old enough to remember him. Scorned by her neighbors... Bethany has no friends and few resources. Finally she effects her departure by persuading Texas Ranger Josh Weston to allow her to become the cook at his brother's ranch.

She doesn't recognize him, but Bethanie and her mother once saved Josh's life with their healing skills, and he's always wondered if he'd ever again see his angels of mercy. Despite his misgivings, he finds himself traveling into the wildest country in Texas with the redhead, her aunt and cousin, and a precocious boy. Never had a woman frustrated him as much as Bethanie, yet Josh can't resist this fiery, independent woman.

A timeless treasure, new fans of Jodi Thomas will welcome the release of BENEATH THE TEXAS SKY. With a twisting, multifaceted plot that explores the highest and depths of emotion, BENEATH THE TEXAS SKY weaves a fascinating tale of complex relationships and challenges. These strong characters will live in the hearts and imagination long after the last page is turned. Very highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars This Book had Too Many Stories Going on at Once, December 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Zebra Historical Romance) (Paperback)
This first novel by Ms. Thomas simply tries too hard.

The first half of this book is dedicated to only Bethanie. It is her journey to escape her uncle, who (typically) lusts after her. She presses Josh to help her escape, and falls in love with him. Josh takes her to his brother's ranch, where she can begin a new life. It is here that the plot and momentum of the book shift from a "Josh and Bethanie" story to a "Bethanie and Ben" story. Through a decision made in haste, Bethanie and Josh are separated for three years before reuniting in a quick story that seemed, actually, too quick. Frankly, most of the novel regarding Bethanie revolves around her involvement with Ben, not Josh.

The second half of this book involves Bethanie and Josh's daughter, Mariah and a boy Josh brought with him from San Antonio, Dusty. Again, this is a diversion of what the book states it is about. I simply had a hard time understanding why the publisher sold this as a love story between Bethanie and Josh when it had more diversions from that story than the book simply could handle.

While I am a Texan, and support Texas writers any chance I get, this book is not Ms. Thomas' best. I would recommend skipping this book in favor of her more recent stuff. This book simply tries too hard to include too many stories. It would have been better to split the story about Mariah, and develop Josh and Bethanie's story without the diversion.

This is the only book I have been disappointed with by Ms. Thomas. I do recommend her other novels, just not this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE JODI THOMAS BOOK, April 8, 2006
This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Zebra Historical Romance) (Paperback)
I have read about ten of Jodi Thomas's books and this is my very favorite.
It tells the story of Bethanie who has been taken in to live with her mother's sister after the death of her mom. Her father's whereabouts is unknown and her Uncle and Aunt tell everyone that she was born out of wedlock and is a nobody. After several advances by her uncle, Beathanie plans to run away and find herself a better life than being their servant and maid.
Her chance comes when a man comes to stay one night in the hotel they run and Bethanie bargains with him to let her leave with him.
It seems there is trouble in town and when the man who we find is a Texas Ranger doing some undercover work, leaves down with the sunt, her daugher, Bethanie and the young stable boy with the help of a Priest.
The story takes us to a Texas Ranch, California and has many connecting storylines that keep the reader wanting to turn the next page.
I read this book until I finished it at five am this morning.
You will meet some people who have secrets which will be revealed and some won't be.
Enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed it..., August 30, 2008
This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Zebra Historical Romance) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, there are basically 3 different books put into one here but you grow to love them all & you wouldn't be satisfied had the last romance been left out. Even before I got to it I was already hoping there would be a sequel but thankfully it was put all into one.

I have read many Jodi Thomas books & have yet to be disappointed with any of them. Although this was not my favorite of hers it was still really enjoyable. I had a few unanswered questions throughout this book but other than that it was great.

I highly recommend this book & author.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor example of Jodi's work, May 6, 2011
This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Paperback)
I've read almost everything Jodi has written and loved it. This book started off well, but quickly became too amateurish to finish. After escaping her Uncle and being chased by Indians, the heroine's behavior becomes erratic. I couldn't get past it...so I didn't. Too bad, because she had a good start to the book.

This book has made me a fan of the historical romance genre. I was very pleased with how the characters in this book came to life and how you came to care about them. I hope others will read this and find, as I have that these are great escape reads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! Perfect blend of easy read and emotional story., December 13, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Paperback)
I've read many of Jodi Thomas' books, and I love all the historical ones (not a fan of contemporary stories). I particularly loved the lay out of this book, essentially being 2 stories in one book. I felt it was an easy read, never bogged down. It flowed well, and I felt the character of Bethanie was deep and well developed. A few plots/characters were stereotypical, but for me it didn't distract from the story. Great story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Suffice to say, great story, October 3, 2011
This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Paperback)
This is my 3rd Jodi Thomas book. I started with "Rewrites Monday" set in current times and it was so well written I looked for more books by this author. This one is set in 1865-1886 and I have read many a book, but this one kept me up at night. Very good story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not typical Thomas, September 24, 2011
This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Paperback)
Beneath the Texas Sky by Jodi Thomas is an overwhelming and angst-filled western romance about love lost and found again. Thomas fans may want to prepare themselves for something a little different than her normal fare.

This book was truly an emotional, heartbreaking journey for me. One that I found very difficult to continue reading. On one hand, it was a beautifully written and thoughtful story. Yet on the other, it was devastatingly tragic for a while. This is the first time I've been thoroughly tempted to abandon her novel or at least skip all the way to the end to discover the ending. By the end, I was glad I finished it, but it was certainly not the easiest journey.

This novel is written in two parts. Part one deals with focuses mainly on Bethanie's disasters, and triumphs, in love. The second part follows her daughter Mariah thirty years later. There is no other way to describe the first part of Beneath the Texas Sky except that it was painful to read. It may have been a depiction "more honest to the time" but I just didn't get that carefree escape that I find with most of my novels. It certainly wasn't your typical and straightforward romance novel.

When I first started this novel, I felt the romance was a little rushed, which scared me into believing a big problem was around the corner to separate these two lovers and I was right. Every decision Bethanie made in this book upset me to no end. Plenty of them I did not understand, but I still continued on. By the end of the first part, we did have a happily ever after, but at a drastic cost. I didn't know whether to be happy about it or depressed.

Part two was a great deal shorter than the first, but a big improvement. The time period is thirty years later and featuring Bethanie's daughter Mariah. She has a big heart and a `give `em hell' attitude that made her quiet the charmer. Again, her love story felt a bit rushed, but it was still quiet enjoyable. Her hero, Dusty, was featured in the first part as a minor character and I was thrilled to see him have a larger role in this book. Both Dusty and Mariah were stubborn to a fault which made them butt heads plenty of times, but that kind of fighting only made the sparks fly between them.

Overall, I was glad I stuck with the novel. It's certainly not my favorite Jodi Thomas novel, but still worth reading. The writing style was the typical Thomas and contained all the breathtaking beauty of the wild west. While I did not agree with all the aspects that pushed the characters to their happily ever after, it still was a novel I enjoyed. Be prepared to shed a few tears over this story and it's dramatic elements. Readers looking for an angst-filled western drama will most likely appreciate the path Jodi Thomas' characters take and adore Beneath the Texas Sky.

Overall Rating: 3/5
Heat Level: 4/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Beneath the Texas Sky, August 6, 2011
This review is from: Beneath The Texas Sky (Paperback)
I think this is my all-time favorite book of hers. I was touched by the love Josh carried for Bethany (even when he thought he had lost her for good).

Does anyone know if she has written a book on Dusty & Mariah? I would love to see their story finished.
