5.0 out of 5 stars "Ethereal folk" worthy of a Grammy, February 18, 2002
By
This review is from: Beneath the Trees (Audio CD)
This is their best album yet. It goes even deeper with the moody, intimate style on the previous album, "Insularia." Dara Rosenwasser has never sounded better, and Charlotte Sather is a terrific addition (voice and flute). If The Cowboy Junkies did a Black Tape for A Blue Girl album, it would be in the range of "Beneath The Trees." Slow-dance music for a midwestern prom where nobody brought a date.

The opening duet is worthy of Queen Elizabeth's court. From there, the songs strike an amazing balance. They're slow and solemn without the ambient snooze factor of full-on ethereal. There IS a beat and rhythm - it's just applied very gently.

Most of the tracks are similar in tempo and style. "Mayim: Water Is Flowing" is perfect. Just my opinion. The vibe is similar to U2's "A Sort of Homecoming." There are only ten words in the song, but they're sung in a dreamy, hypnotic manner. "This Part of Fortune Lies" is another winner.

Their rendition of a traditional murder ballad, "Banks of The Ohio," should've been nominated for a Grammy. One question, though: CAN I HEAR A MURDER BALLAD WHERE THE WOMAN BUSTS A ROCK OVER THE GUY'S HEAD FOR A CHANGE? The song is in C-major; Charlotte's D-major vocal part at the end is poignant.

Get this album and "Insularia." The earlier CDs are good, but these last two are amazing. Soothing, mysterious and catchy. The songs alternate between mournfulness and innocence in a very subtle way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faith & Disease, April 5, 2006
By
This review is from: Beneath the Trees (Audio CD)
The beautiful voices and lyrics are what make faith and disease one of the best(in my oppinion, the best) dark folk bands ever. Beneath the trees is not only one of their best cd's, but the song of the same title is very nice and calming and one of their best as well. I highly recommend those whom like the gothic style of music to get this cd, but I recommend it to all anyway!

Beneath the Trees is my second Faith & Disease CD purchased. I like this one quite a bit, but did not have any song grab me. I will need a few more listens, but I believe that it will be up there with Passage to Kunming (sp).
