This review is from: Benedict: Piano Concerto in C minor, op. 45, Concerto in E flat major, Op. 89; Macfarren:Concertstuck (Romantic Piano Concerto vol. 48) (Audio CD)
Benedict and MacFarren present with most melodic concerti. Both were Romantic composers (Benedict) and teachers (MacFarren) of the late 19th C. Neither are considered giants of composition, but the works of both make for wonderful listening. Each is very approachable by the most casual listener. One need not be a musical technician to understand and to love their work. Neither is played very often in the US. Such seems shortsighted as these works are the kind to convert occasional concert-goers into real fans of classical music - at least of the Romantic period. Howard Shelley and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra star in the the hyperion release of the Romantic Piano Concerto ~ 48. The CD is somewhat difficult to come by, but worth the trouble of searching for it.
