For the last few years, my doctor has advised me to add more fiber to my diet, preferably in the foods I eat, but with fiber supplements if necessary. I've used several fiber products, including Benefiber, with good results. I've mixed the Benefiber with drinks and applesauce, but I prefer to mix it with plain water. The finely milled powder dissolves very quickly and has a neutral taste that makes it easy to swallow. Benefiber is sugar-free, although a 2-teaspoon serving has 15 calories, all from carbohydrates. A serving contains 3 grams of soluble fiber, about 10% of the recommended daily amount of dietary fiber. The fiber in Benefiber is from wheat dextrin, a manufacturing by-product. The gluten content in Benefiber is low enough (less than 20 ppm) that the FDA allows it to be labeled as "gluten-free."

Fiber supplements like Benefiber are believed to have several health benefits, including cholesterol reduction, gastrointestinal health, and weight management. Those are all good reasons for taking fiber supplements, but as someone approaching seventy years old, one of my biggest concerns is regularity. Adding fiber to my diet, especially soluble fiber like that found in Benefiber, has been extremely helpful in avoiding constipation.

Benefiber is recommended for use in any noncarbonated drinks, soft foods, and for baking. Based on my experience using Benefiber for several years, I recommend it as a good way to add fiber to your diet.

I keep a bottle at home and another at the office to fortify whatever I'm drinking throughout the day. I've never detected a change in taste (even in water). Benefiber also mixes better than anything other fiber supplement I've tried. Some advice: If you pour the powder into a beverage slowly, it won't clump and will stir easily. If you pour the powder into an empty glass, then pour your beverage on top, it will clump and will take quite a while to stir thoroughly.

WOW! just WOW!

I have NEVER, NEVER had a fiber that can be mixed into simple beverages with no grit.

For instance - I mixed 1 tablespoon (1.5 servings) into a quarter cup of dt coke (i.e. it was a mix of 20% fiber, 80% liquid). Completely drinkable...almost no flavor change and no texture to speak of. Water has similar results. WOW!

(For what it's worth, it says NOT to put in carbonated beverages, but that's because this fiber, like others I've tried, really reacts and causes it to foam up - doesn't mean you can't just wait for it to settle and drink it anyway)

I tried it in yogurt - couldn't taste it there either.

Put a bunch in waffle mix - waffles cooked up beautifully - better than bisquick alone, in fact!

Put some in spaghetti sauce - thickened it slightly, but no flavor, no grit.

Seriously...wow.

Compared it to some other fibers we had laying around...this is even lower calorie! (15 calories, to say, 20 calories for equivalent of a CVS generic that IS gritty)

I don't know about effectiveness - seems okay, but I don't know how to compare (I add it to my diet, but don't know how to tell if I'm getting enough or not provided everything is otherwise "working"). This does use wheat dextrin for fiber as opposed to psyllium husk that, say, Metamucil does.

Some research shows: psyllium is known to have a nutty (in my mind "icky") flavor, a distinct smell, is sometimes gritty, and causes liquids to thicken. It has been shown to help lower cholestoral, but can cause allergic reactions, particularly in those with gluten allergies. It requires ingestion with more liquid and can cause choking or constipation if consumed with inadequate water. It can also cause bloating and flatulence.

This dissolves well in water. I remember a number of years back when I used fiber supplements in a powder form and I would mix them with water and not matter how hard I tried a bunch would stay on the bottom of the glass. This dissolves quickly and does not leave anything noticeable at the bottom of my glass, has no noticeable taste and does not contain sugar or other sweeteners.

It seems like fiber is being credited with helping everything from the colon to the heart. I have been told it is critical to losing weight since it fills a person up and they don't eat so much. I don't get enough fiber in my diet so I have used fiber powder supplements over the years.

I like Benefiber. It dissolves easily in water, has no flavor that I notice and is sugar free. There are only 15 calories per serving and while there is 4 grams of carbohydrates there are also three grams of fiber so the carbohydrates are negligible.

Benefiber is made of wheat dextrin. The container says it is good for cooking but I used it mostly in water but I have also mixed it with yogurt and it was not noticeable in any way. This is one of the best powder fiber supplements I have tried.

I have been a daily user of Benefiber for many years. It's easy to use and blends easily in to most liquids and drinks without imparting any flavor or chalky texture. As for the benefits of fiber, it works reliably well. As one of the standard ingredients of my morning protein shake, or as an addition to my weekend fresh squeezed orange juice, I can confidently say that my body works "differently" when the Benefiber is left out. There might be other fiber supplements that work as well, but I'm confident that nothing works better than Benefiber, so I will probably continue to be a "regular" (get it?) user for some time to come.
