Book Description

0849327911 978-0849327919 July 24, 1998 1
The use of drugs as remedies for various types of diseases has a long tradition; however, it has only been recently recognized that the value of any given compound must be evaluated in light of its benefit to risk ratio. When prescribing drugs, physicians must look at the big picture of the drug's benefits in relation to its side effects and possible toxicity. The aim of this handbook is to compile data from various authors, providing clinicians with data that will optimize their decision making in selecting effective, low-risk drug treatments. It also provides research workers, including physicians, pharmacists, and basic scientists, with a sound basis for increasing knowledge of the risk/benefit ratios of various drugs. Includes detailed assessments of the following types of drugs: o Antihypertensive agents o Diuretics o Anti-diabetic drugs o Anticonvulsant drugs o Drugs for Parkinson's disease o Antihistamines and antiserotonins o Cytokines and immunomodulators o Non-opioid analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents o Antibacterial agents o Antiviral agents o Drugs used in reproductive endocrinology o Systemic drugs for skin diseases o Topical liposome drugs o Topical glucocorticoids

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book appears to be one of the first to examine risk and benefits of new drugs in a more quantitative manner…this book provides a solid overview of drug types and their benefit/risk ratio…This resource would compliment the collection of most health science libraries…Of special interest to those involved with drug development and pharmacology and therapeutics.
--Reviewer: Dale A. Stirling, Environmental Historian/Information Specialist, E-STREAMS, Vol. 3, No. 4

3.0 out of 5 stars Strong on examples, weak on methods, June 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Benefit/Risk Ratio: A Handbook for the Rational Use of Potentially Hazardous Drugs (Hardcover)
This book gives many examples of where Risk-Benefit analysis was utilized in the assessment of commonplace therapies up to and including more modern lipid complexes, etc. In this regard, the book is quite useful although abstracting from these specific examples into some generalizable approach is difficult at best. In addition, the section specifically devoted to methods is limited and does not provide a comprehensive overview which would have been greatly appreciated. Not recommended unless the therapies included in this work are relevant to your area of practice/research.

With the strong emphasis on quality-of-life evaluation and medical outcome research in the current drug development environment, it is surprising that the effort to conduct a meaningful benefit and risk assessment to support the regulatory approval of a new drug stays at the minimum level. Read the first page
