This book was the inspiration for the classic film "Son of Fury" starring Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney. The book is very engaging and tells the tale the son of a titled English lord whose birth is disgraced by the fact that his mother was the wife of another man. By consequence the family estate that was his father's has come into the possession of his loathsome uncle. The rest of the book concerns first Ben's servitude and escape of his uncle, his flight from justice on the seas, his time among south seas islanders, and his return and conquest in England. The book has much of the substance of a R.L Stevenson tale while maybe not the style. It weaves quite a different path than the film which clearly needed to censor much of the content of the book but also made an alternatively great story (highly recommend the film). If you like adventure or tales set in the 18th century, this one is for you.

now, I got to read more Edison Marshall books. :D I had to read this after watching 'Son of Fury' with Tyrone Power which was interesting in it's own right. The film is more upbeat than the book, not to say that the book doesn't have a good ending. I'm surprised and a little bit delighted that there were adult themes at least in books back then. Because the movies back then were cleaned up and polished- either the storyline or they make certain characters more interesting, likeable etc. This is the life and adventures of Benjamin Blake who was base-born because his mother was the daughter of a gunsmith (who was also married to owner of the shop) and his father was a charming buck of a gentleman. They ran away together to the Indies, and Ben was the only survivor of that 'union.' His uncle took the title Squire Blake, intrudes of Ben's life in hopes of controlling him by keeping him down in poverty by keeping him as a stable hand of Breetholm. Ben, with all his fire, youth, and intelligence is not going to let some tyrant of English gentry shape his life and future!

It was good, but not nearly as good as the DVD "Son of Fury" with Tyrone Power
