5.0 out of 5 stars Great recordings of lesser-known gems, July 25, 2000

Ahmed E. Ismail (Cambridge, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Benjamin Britten: Cantata misericordium; Deus in adjutorium meum; Chorale; Gerald Finzi: Requiem da Camera (Audio CD)
This disc is a great introduction to the shorter choral works of Finzi, Britten, and Holst. The two major works on the disc--Finzi's "Requiem da Camera" and Britten's "Cantata misericordium"--deserve many more performances than they normally receive. The third movement of the Requiem, "Only a man harrowing clods," in particular, is quite haunting. The Holst Psalm-settings are inventive as well.

The performances are first-rate, as is the recording--the singing is quite clear and distinct, perhaps as a result of the small numbers of the Britten Singers. The soloists do an excellent job, and are well-teamed in the Cantata.
