Book Description

February 1, 1994 3 and up
Benjamin Porcupine loves to explore new places and new things, but his curiosity leads him into all kinds of trouble, and it is up to Mama Porcupine to lend a hand in extricating Benjamin from his many predicaments.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An outing to the forest with his mama opens the door to a world of adventure for an intrepid young porcupine. While his mother reads a book, Benjamin climbs a tree, tastes a dandelion, finds a worm and talks to some ants. His curiosity leads him to the pond, and when he reaches out to catch a whirligig bug--"kersplash!" Rescued by his mama, the would-be explorer is dried off and carried home for a soothing bath, jammies and a bedtime story. Morgan takes the sort of small-scale activities that define a preschooler's day and weaves them into a gently reassuring story, rounded out by winsome watercolors of the chubby, fetching porcupine cub and his mother. A final treat: endpapers delicately picked out with the critters Benjamin encounters on his travels. Ages 1-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-A slight, reassuring story about young Benjamin and Mama Porcupine and their day in the meadow. The youngster tastes a dandelion, talks to an ant, and examines crickets and earthworms. When he climbs a tree, his calm Mama is there to help him down; when he tumbles into a pond, she comes to the rescue. They then hurry home to a hot bath and bedtime snack. Mama reads him a story and tucks him into his cozy crib. Illustrations appear in attractive cameos of predominantly blue and green watercolors. Even the endpapers are designed for enjoyment, with a border of small bugs labeled for close examination. From the safety of an adult's lap, preschoolers can share Benjamin's spirit of adventure and appreciate his mother's loving efforts to keep him safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mama & Son Both Love It, April 22, 2008
This review is from: Benjamin's Bugs (Hardcover)
We got this at a garage sale, and what a find it has been. My 3.4yo loves it, as the boy porcupine gets into scrapes climbing and exploring his world. I love that it has the mother called "Mama," as that is what I am called, and the language is easy for my budding reader to take a stab at. They also have pictures in the covers of the different creatures you meet with labels, so now he knows several kinds of bugs and other pond creatures. Books ends in bedtime, so good at night.
