Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Often scattershot and self-indulgent, tribute albums have become a much maligned genre, but Benny Carter's Songbook is the sort of project that justifies the whole concept. Carter is not only a legendary jazz instrumentalist, but also a vastly underrated songwriter who doesn't actually sing himself. How are you going to showcase his talent except through a tribute album? By pulling together 13 different singers to tackle 15 of Carter's songs--written anytime from the 1930s to the 1990s--Songbook makes such a persuasive case for Carter that all our previous notions about the pantheon of jazz songwriters must be reevaluated. --Geoffrey Himes

Format: Audio CD
~ During his career that spanned seven decades, Benny Carter established an excellent reputation as a talented alto sax man, composer, and arranger. So much so that his talent as a song writer was often overlooked. However, several standards came from his pen: "When Lights Are Low", "Blues in My Heart", "Only Trust Your Heart", "Key Largo" and "Cow-Cow Boogie". His first song was recorded in 1928, and with this CD we get many of his classics plus five new 1995 songs. Amazon lists the songs, but not who sings each one - so here is the listing:
1. Only Trust Your Heart ~ Dianne Reeves
2. All That Jazz ~ Carmen Bradford & Kenny Rankin
3. I Was Wrong ~ Joe Williams
4. Rain ~ Marlena Shaw
5. Cow-Cow Boogie ~ Jon Hendricks
6. Fresh Out Of Love ~ Diana Krall
7. Speak Now ~ Billy Stritch
8. A Kiss From You ~ Shirley Horn
9. You Bring Out The Best In Me ~ Bobby Short
10. My Kind Of Trouble Is You ~ Ruth Brown
11. When Lights Are Low ~ Weslia Whitfield
12. Lonely Woman ~ Nancy Marano
13. Key Largo ~ Carmen Bradford
14. We Were In Love ~ Dianne Reeves & Joe Williams
15. I See You ~ Peggy Lee
~ While all of the vocalists obvious participated in this project because of their respect for Benny, and each of the singers put sufficient emotion into their rendition of the song, unfortunately some of the vocalists were past their prime at the time of this recording and so a few of the vocal performances are a little shaky in places or limited in vocal range. However, the majority of the vocalist shine.
~ The supporting quintet consists of cornetist Warren Vaché, pianist Chris Neville, bassist Steve LaSpina, drummer Sherman Ferguson and Carter himself (88 years old at the time) on alto.

On a scale of 1 to 10 this album rates a 15. Elegant compositions of the legendary Carter performed by an all star cast of legends along with a few new voices who prove themselves equally impressive. If you are not familiar with the works of Benny Carter, composer, you owe it to yourself to buy this CD.

Format: Audio CD
This CD is a delight from beginning to end. Wonderful singing by Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall, Wesla Whitfield, Bobby Short and a bunch of others. All first-rate. Some of these songs I've heard for the first time and they are gems. Backed up by Benny himself on alto sax.
