Benny is still playing well at 71 even though he sits out on a couple of songs. For his best jazz sound I would suggest my favorite Benny Goodman CD--Small Groups. Also excellent are Trio and Quartet Sessions, and The Benny Goodman Sextet featuring Charlie Christian. Vol. 6 of The Yale University Music Library (also a live recording) has a similar but maybe slightly better sound to this DVD. The video quality of the DVD is just good. Maybe the lighting at the Tivoli was just fair. Enjoy it for the memories, and because I think it is the only Goodman DVD concert.

I hesitated for a long time to get this one, I shouldn't have, it is great addition to my concert collection. I didn't grow up in the big band era and like most, grew up listening to pop music. I'm playing catch up in the vast and wonderful world of jazz. This music will endure when all the pop stars are long forgotten. This glimpse of Benny Goodman was quite revealing, he is humorous, with a hint of W.C. Fields in his dialogue. This is no shocker as entertainers of his day were all adept at bringing humor along with their own unique talents. This guy has got it, don't pass this one up.

Benny Goodman's "Farewell" contains both a CD and DVD version of this product, and is at a bargain price! I like to have both formats rather than just one, don't you?
