A Good Starter Mandolin,
By This unit does not have those "handy" legs like some of the others and I feel that makes it sturdier but it also means you don't have that convenience (I prefer sturdy over convenient). There aren't any "no skid" pads on the bottom edges so you need to create your own sturdy blocking (I run mine up against a large wooden cutting block which works fine but this is one improvement I would like to see on the unit). The slot for the 3 changeable blades is easy enough to figure out but one really needs to tighten the two "holder" screws tight or the blade will slide out while cutting (not a safe thing to happen on a mandolin). The method (two screws) for setting the cutting height is a bit cumbersome but I think this is another place where sturdiness wins over convenience in a lower-end device. So, the only two things I'd like to see changed on this unit are the addition of some "no-skid" rubber edges and a more effective and easier way to secure the interchangeable blades. Overall, a good lower-end, starter mandolin.

This review is from: BN3 Slicer Benriner Large (Kitchen)
Whatever Amazon's calling it, this is in fact the "Super Benriner"--big brother to the regular Benriner. What's different? Well, it's beige instead of green, it has metal adjustment and blade holder knobs, and it's much, much wider. Cuts like a dream, but the hand guard is still something of a joke and a Kevlar glove would be a good idea regardless of how careful you think you might be.
My one complaint is that the white-ish plastic stains pretty easily. Carrots will leave a big orange smear on the surface.

The middle path,
By I buy these by the case from quickspice and sell them to friends. One note. Alway, always, always where a glove. Mandolins are famous for slicing fingers. i use the blue rubber coated ones, again, you could spend more for one designed for cut protection but I find the blue rubber coated gloves to work just fine. peace, Jimmy

This item is very handy for consistent slicing every time. The safety handle is not very effective so watch your fingers! I use it often and wouldn't be without it.

Super Benriner Is A Super Tool and a Great Value,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Did you ever wonder how resatuarants make those thousands of lovely julienned veggies, those perfect paper thin sliced radishes, carrots, onions? The answer, often, is a Benriner. The Super Benriner is wider than other models, so it handles larger vegetables easily. Changing and adjusting the blades is simple. Setting the blades for waffle cuts did take a bit of getting used to, but shostring potatoes were a breeze. It is a lot less expensive than the French mandolines, and for the home cook, it's a great value. I was inspired to buy it by the beautiful photos of elegantly cut vegetables and the frequent references to Benriner in Mario Batali's Molto Gusto. The recipes are simple but sophisticated and the presentation is stunning, thank frequently to his Benriner.

Great Buy,

I bought this item for our hotel. The cooks asked for it specifically, as it is the sharpest out there. I came to Amazon because they were able to get it to me for less than half of what Wasserstrom and our local foodservice distributer could get it for. Made me look good!

Best Kitchen Tools,

This Japanese Style mandolin slicer is the best on the market. Its razor sharp and can even slice truffles paper thin. If you hand wash it and take good care of will last a lifetime. The blade and attachments are removable for cleaning. You can also sharpen it if need be. I high recommend taking all safety precautions when using it. Like I said its razor sharp.

I own a Japanese fast food shop and we use this slicer to do all our prep. The unit is sturdy and easy to use. No problems slicing paper thin slices of onion and cabbage.
One problem is that the ultra thin comb attachment bends too easily while doing carrot slicing. (but we don't use the ultrathin comb at all)

One of my foremost indispensable kitchen conveniences.,
By I've had mine for 6 years now, and still LOVE it. There is nothing that rusts, and the tightening screws for the comb blades are brass and work exceptionally well, and blades are meant to be replaceable. This makes quick work of salad mix, cole slaw, matchstick potatoes or carrots, or a sandwich-making tray of perfect, thin, even slices of tomato, onion rounds, pickle slices, for easy self-serve burgers or sandwiches, buffet style or for lunchboxes. Lastly, it allows me to slice or shred ingredients over a bowl or frypan without getting out the cutting board. I came back to Amazon to find a replacement blades because after 6 years of constant use, the blades are starting to dull. That's considerably better mileage than a food processor, and much easier to use, clean, store, and buy in the first place.
