Homework Woes,
This review is from: The Berenstain Bears and the Homework Hassle (First Time Books(R)) (Library Binding)
When I saw this title on the bookshelf, I thought,"Aha! This would be a good read with a moral and lesson plan for my 5-year old son. Little did I realise that there's a lesson to be learnt from it myself--As parents, we need to go back to the time when we were young and remember that we once were like that too.Occasionally, we too may have traded our grades for more interesting entertainment that the world around us offers. Mama and Papa Bear had no intention of prying into Brother Bear's schoolbag until a waft of stale food led their noses to the scent. A teacher's note reveals that Brother Bear had too many things vying for his attention and schoolwork was the last thing on his mind. I like the writer's sense of humour in creating in Bear Country a world similar to our own. For instance, the bears have The Bear Stooges, Game Bear, Bearsmoke, Bear Trek, Bear Revenue Service while we have The Three Stooges, GameBoy, Gunsmoke, Star Strek and Inland Revenue Service. Both my son and myself enjoy reading this book together and chuckling at the wit and humour of this story. Once again, the Berenstain Bears has certainly made reading pleasurable and fun for my boy.

Like all Berenstain Bears books this one is great. Brother Bear didn't do his homework, this book talks about if you put your mind to it and take your time you can get your homework done and still have time to play. Homework first then play time.

My 6-year old loves the Berenstain Bears series, and he likes that Brother Bear learns his lesson in this story. My son went through a "I don't do homework" phase, and this story came at just the right moment!

We own quite a few of the Berenstein Bears books. This one followed the similar theme of teaching important life lessons. This lesson centers around procrastination and the importance of getting things done. Those of you who grew up on these have likely read this one before. They updated the text to say that Brother Bear was on a CELL PHONE and yet they left the picture as this antiquated phone that I could relate to but my little ones couldn't. They didn't understand what the large antenna was on the phone. This is an old book. If you took the time to update the text, spend the extra ten minutes to photoshop the phone in the picture. Not a big deal but definitely IRKSOME! Other than that, I'd say that I wasn't particularly keen on the way that they had Brother Bear speak to his parents about his 'privacy' or the way he pouts and goes off. Children are impressionable and learn the bad behaviors as well as the good ones. Not my favorite in the series but a decent story.

My daugther has several of the Berenstain Bear books and she loves reading them. They have a positive message for children while keeping their attention. Even though she reads at a higher level, she still loves these books.

For those of us who were particularly lazy about doing homework, Brother Bear's experience reminds us of what happens when we develop bad habits early in life. Brother decides that it's more fun chasing girls, talking on his cell phone, watching tv, and just about everything else than it is doing is homework. His parents clamp down on him to get it done, then papa is visited by the BRS, (our IRS) because he hasn't done his taxes. Brother bear learns that dad did the same thing with his homework when he was his age and comes home to discover the tax man at their house, telling his dad he'd better get them done. The story ends with both of them doing their "homework." Great moral lesson, life lesson really, on being lazy and procrastinating. A true hit in our house, highly recommend!
