Berenstain's "God Loves You!",
By bmhnfa (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Berenstain Bears: God Loves You! (Berenstain Bears/Living Lights) (Paperback)
Very nice story. It's a little wordy for the younger ones, but still interesting.
Brother and Sister are disappointed because they don't make the basketball team and the school play, respectively. (They're chosen to be the team and stage managers instead.) They feel very disappointed and unappreciated. Mama, with some clumsy "help" from Papa, lol, is able to explain that God loves us no matter what, and that Brother's and Sister's teachers must have a lot of confidence in the cubs, to have given them jobs that require so much responsibility. It's a story almost everyone can relate to, and it would encourage youngsters (or their parents) who are in similar situations.

A good book with a great message,

I read a Berentain Bear book to my daugther every night. I purchased this one to put in her Easter basket last year. Although a little on the longer side, this book finishes up with a great message, as all books in this series do. I like this book because its entertaining and presents life's challenges on a level they can understand and relate to. My daughter continues to request this book at night time almost a year later!

This book has a great concept, but it is very long. My 4 year old can barely sit through all of it and she LOVES books. This is the only book we've come across that she has a hard time sitting still for. I would say it would be more appropriate for 5 or 6 year olds. But, great otherwise a great book!

A Beautiful Story,

A very nice story reassuring children that God loves them even when they may feel that they don't really deserve it. A useful book for early childhood Christian education.

The book sort of has the pretense of being Christian, but it's very different. Basically the values communicated here are that God loves everyone, be kind, and (in the other books of the series: go to church. There is certainly no mention of Jesus who is Christ. Without a confession of Christ, it's basically anti-christ according to 1 John 4:3 and 2 John 1:7. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's "of the devil!" But Jesus said, "He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad." (Matt. 12:30). Now some might say I should be liberal and apply, "whoever is not against us is for us" but that was in the context of those actually using his name for good. Here we have the absence of Christ, and only the mention of religious principles of god, kindness and church. While it may be in keeping with the characters of the Bear family, it's disturbing that the father is portrayed as a bumbling fool without a functional knowledge or fear of the Lord. In this book he can't answer his children's questions about basic doctrine. Instead, the mother answers decisively. In another story in the series he's concerned about watching the football game on Sunday, but the mother demonstrates spriritual leadership of the family by initiating fellowship with the church and worship. Ok, so the father bear was never the brightest bulb in previous stories, but these books are obviously a departure from the bear family's original characters which never previously featured a pretense of religiousity. So if we're going to depart from the simplicity of "The Bike Lesson" and have themes of moral virtue, what's the point of casting the papa bear as ignorant and negligent, and then never having his character reformed through genuine repentance? I still like the Bears. The Bike Lesson, Spooky Old Tree, Vacation... those are classics.

I enjoyed this book. I bought it for bedtime story time even though I do not think my son will repeatedly request this book.
