Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

"The room shared by Brother and Sister is a mess because the cubs argue

over who should neaten up instead of working together. Sure to make toddlers

smile while they absorb an implied lesson."--Publishers Weekly. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt .  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears".

Over 50 children's books later, Stan and Jan still plan all of their books together -- both write the stories, and both write the pictures.  They live outside of Philadelphia in the country. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful book, December 28, 2005
By
This is a great book to teach kids to clean up after themselves and what happens when they don't. In this book, mama gets so fed up with the mess in the cubs' room, that she comes back with a huge box and starts tossing all their things into it. Much at the cubs' protest, all their favorite toys are tossed inside. The illustrations are just wonderful in this book. They show a puzzle half finished and covered with cobwebs, spilled cups and drinks and dust and dirt all over everything. It's just very clear how nasty a room can get when it's not kept in order. Papa bear comes to the rescue and makes the cubs their very own organization center (must have watched HGTV out there in his garage where he makes his furniture!) where they have a toybox and a pegboard to store the items in the room. And, he makes boxes with labels to stack in their closet for their smaller items so they don't come tumbling out onto their heads anymore.

Everyone is very happy with the solution, especially the cubs since now they have a room they can enjoy themselves and with their friends.

Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, December 14, 2005
By
The world lost a real gem of a writer when Stan Berenstain passed on November 29. Together, Berenstain and his wife, Jan, and eventually their two sons, created books featuring lovable but flawed characters who tackle just about every real issue that faces families.

This book is an excellent example. Very few children are naturally hyper-organized, most of them have messy room problems at some point in their young lives. This book shows by example that it is possible to keep a room clean and organized without too much work, and that life is so much more fun when a room is clean! It also shows that even adults sometimes have trouble keeping themselves organized, and that cleanliness and organization are lifelong pursuits. Like all of the Berenstain Bears books, it presents a problem and a solution with a moral lesson included in a style that children will find entertaining and even funny. Really, a great book!

I read this book when a child, and still remember it at age 25. Now, it didn't turn me into a neat person, but with fond memories of this book in my heart, I plan on having a clean room ... one of these days.
