Editorial Reviews

Berg's masterful and thought-provoking opera tells the gripping story of the rise and fall of an alluring, destructive but vulnerable woman,
culminating in her death at the hands of Jack the Ripper. Christof Loy's austere, minimalist production allows the complexities of the drama to unfold through the sumptuous, taut beauty of the score. Agneta Eichenholz and Michael Volle lead an all-star cast under
Antonio Pappano. Recorded in High
Definition and true surround sound.

Although I have never seen a live production of "Lulu", I have experienced it through several recordings from vinyl disc through cd to dvd. First, Karl Bohm's recording in the 1960s before the opera was completed by Frederick Cerha. This version was distinguished by an anguished, cathartic and beautiful performance by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as Dr. Schon. I can still hear in my mind his cries as he is dying and desperately but futilely tries to save his son Alwa from his fate. The next version is one for the ages: Pierre Boulez conducting the completed score for the first time, and what an amazing, authoritative reading he presented. And his cast was equal in every way, from the sheer melodrama of some scenes to the subtlety of others: Teresa Stratus as Lulu (BRAVA! Enough said!), a virile and formidable Dr. Schon by Franz Mazura, and a beautifully, lyrically sung Alwa by Kenneth Riegel. This version remains the touchstone for me. However, the dvd version on this page conducted by the versatile, inspired Antonio Pappano is exciting, powerful and beautiful. It gives me great joy to experience a third generation of "Lulu" conductors maintaining the high standards of Bohm and Boulez. Michael Volle owns the role of Dr. Schon; he is quite simply an amazing actor who possesses a beautiful, flexible, utterly convincing baritone voice. When he returns in the last scene as Jack the Ripper, the mix of horror and beauty, violence and rapture is stunning. Agneta Eichenholz embodies Lulu with wonderful singing and nuanced, understated acting; I admire her performance more each time I play it. Klaus Florian Vogt looks and sounds like the handsome, talented and utterly naïve character Alwa is. Read more ›
