Editorial Reviews

Gunnar Berg (1909-1989) enjoys a unique position among Danish composers. He was part of the international modernist milieu in post-war Europe in the circle around Olivier Messiaen and had inspiring meetings with John Cage, Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Berg's music has only recently become properly known and recognized in his native Denmark. This CD offers rare experiences of the experiments with 12-tone music and serialism from the 1950s, with the recorder in focus, as well as complex, pulsating guitar music from the last part of his life.

Format: Audio CD
Gunnar Berg (1909-89) is an almost forgotten Danish composer of the 20th century, but the Dacapo label has taken some steps to preserve his legacy. On this disc, guitarists Per Dybro Sørensen and Michael Norman and recordist Bolette Roed perform some of Berg's solo works and duos.

Though taken from the name of one of the pieces, "Melos" is a somewhat misleading title for the CD as a whole: this is not traditionally melodic classical music. Berg was a follower of mid-century high modernism, leaving his native Denmark and its Nordic music tradition in 1948 for southern climes and the revolutionary music going on in Central Europe.

9 Duos for Recorder and Guitar (1957/84), Ar-Goat for 2 guitars (1984-85), "Melos" for solo guitar (1979) and Tiedra for solo recorder (1952) date from a thirty-year span, but they are all within the same general style. It is warm, colourful music, reflecting not the most abstract Darmstadt modernism, but the softer, more timbral sort and there is some use of quarter tones in the later works. Still, the lack of any variety or much stylistic evolution is disappointing. Imagine if Pierre Boulez had written "Le Marteau sans Maitre" over and over again for his entire career and you'll have an idea of what this disc sounds like. Dacapo's unusually detailed liner notes point to all kinds of wonderful details in this piece, but when I listen, I can't hear anything special.

I can't really knock the pieces here. If I put one on, I can listen until to the end without complain. However, there's absolutely nothing unique or individual about the pieces here, and I'm not drawn to explore more of Gunnar Berg's output. Guitar afficionados might draw greater pleasure from this disc (I admit that even with composers I love, I find their guitar music challenging).
