I had been looking at these on Amazon for a few months and finally decided to buy. My Wife was very hesitant but was willing to try it. We were amazed at how well it worked. I put a large pan with peanut oil in it, enough to fry french fries, and set it to 450...within 30 seconds you could see those distortions the oil makes at the bottom of the pan when it's getting hot. We've used both electric and gas and usually when you put the frozen fries in the pan the oil "cools" and has to reheat somewhat....not with this item. The oil quickly recovered it's temp.

The reason I bought it was mainly to cut down on energy usage during summer. The AC normally has to battle it out with the stovetop, this item however greatly reduces the heat output which is exactly what I was looking for. During the winter months we'll still use the gas stove since it both cooks and heats but this little jewel will be heavily used during the warmer months.

If you're sitting on the fence about one of these like I was, go ahead and get one, you won't regret it.

Bought this with a gift card I got for christmas, and so far its working great. I do work in professional kitchen for a living and my main concern was getting the heat out put that I needed to actually sautee foods properly. The heat is great! It brings the oil to it smoking point very quickly, and keeps the heat up through any cooking.

Couple down sides. The numeric increments and the actual degrees don't match up. When the temperature is set to 180* it still boils, but when you set it to the 1 setting it acts as a warming setting. By no means a deal breaker but took a minute to figure out, almost burned dinner one night setting it to 180* thinking that this was well be low boiling. Next, the lining/casing of the unit is plastic. Be aware when cooking with larger pots and pans because it will melt the plastic if the pan comes off the cooking surface, as it did with my unit.

The safety measures are great, it turning its self off if there isn't a pan on the surface, and not turning on at all if there isn't the proper cook ware on the surface. Word to the wise, don't leave it plugged in with a pan on it when not in use if you have pets that like hopping up on the counter. One of my cats turned it on by stepping on the ON button. Luckily I was at home and heard the unit turn on.

Overall I'm happy with the induction top. Living in a small apartment with no gas and knowing that the standard electric cook tops are worthless, this unit puts out the heat consistently. It also doesn't take up a lot of space and cleans up easily. I'm definitely happy with this purchase.

I bought this induction cook top for my wife more than a year ago. I picked it because of the positive reviews of other customers and because of the control it gave one over temperature as well as cooking times. While my wife was initially resistant to the idea of having a portable cook top out on our counter-top all the time, this resistance quickly dissipated once she began to use it. Now we both have more or less abandoned our range, preferring instead to use this cook top whenever possible. Neither of us find it particularly loud, and we both enjoy not only the numerous heat settings, but the timer function as well. My wife, for example, will get up in the morning to cook some oatmeal. After mixing the ingredients together, she puts the timer on and goes off and does other things. When the timer goes off, the unit shuts off and the oatmeal stops cooking almost immediately. No need to worry about over-cooking and - with the precise temperature controls - no need to worry about boiling over either! In short, an excellent unit.

FYI - around Christmas time, this unit sometimes goes on sale for ~$ 120.00. At this price, it's a *steal*.

I live in in a very warm area and summer means very high electric bills for the AC. I enjoy cooking, but honestly, I really don't enjoy the heat from my traditional gas range. I have used coil electric ranges in the past and they can't compare to gas for immediate response, not to mention seeing the actual flame level. A favorite boutique restaurant of mine has a small kitchen with 4 commercial induction cooktops. The chef gave me a demonstration using the cooktop and I was impressed by how fast, immediate, and relatively cool the cooking process was on an induction unit. I began to consider replacing my gas range with induction. Before investing in replacing my substantial collection of Calphalon cookware, installing a dedicated 220 volt line, and of course, actually buying a new induction range, I thought I'd try a portable cooktop. I did much research on both professional cooktops and consumer models, and ended up buying the Berghoff.
As others have mentioned, there is a learning curve when using induction. I found that setting the unit to 10 (boost mode really) for a brief moment to get water boiling is excellent, in fact any kind of fast high temp is easy. Simmering though is more of a problem. Even turning down the heat setting to 1 or 2 still seems too hot to maintain a low simmer. I tried using the temp setting instead, but again found the unit less useful in maintaining a consistent very low temp. Reading reviews of full size induction ranges I noticed that some units appear to maintain a low (140 degree) better than others, so this may well be the case with this Berghoff unit.

However, the pluses so outweigh the minuses that I have made the plunge, and ordered a new GE induction range to replace my gas unit.
