4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, but not big enough for medium to large cat
This carrier looks and feels sturdy and well made. The fleece pad for the floor is soft and cozy looking. The strap is quite comfortable too. I have a medium to large size cat, approximately 11 pounds, and found this carrier much smaller in size than I expected and had to return it. If you have a small dog or small cat, this would be a very nice carrier. I'd suggest...

I ordered the "Large" to transport an adult cat to the vet and back. She is a typical 2.5 year old house cat and is barely able to fit in the large carrier comfortably (she has trouble turning around). For a 15 minute trip to the vet, it's okay, but I wouldn't want to subject her to much more than that.

I purchased this bag to take my 12 pound puppy on a plane. He fit perfectly in it, and it fit perfectly under the seat. I highly recommend this item!

As far as quality, it's good, but lacks some as far as other soft sided carriers I've seen, design-wise. Like, being able to load the animal from the top of the carrier as well as either end (good way to avoid "splayed leg" syndrome on entry).

For the price, I think I could have gotten something better designed, but it'll do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Things Come in 'Small' Packages!!, February 15, 2009
Length:: 0:14 Mins

The video shows our new little Havanese puppy (2.5 lbs at time of pick-up), Indy. To bring him home from Cleveland, he rode in a car with me to the airport, flew from Cleveland to Baltimore, and then drove another hour and a half home- all in this carrier. This carrier is ideal for in-cabin flying for small dogs/puppies.

This carrier was the perfect transportation companion for our puppy- one end unzips completely so you can easily place your dog inside the carrier. You can unzip the other end half-way, so you can easily pet and comfort your dog if he's upset. On one side of the carrier is another zippered opening- Bergan calls it 'PetConnect'- and it serves a similar role to the other, larger openings in helping you comforting your pet. All of these easy access points helped me to quickly comfort our little puppy throughout my travels home.

Knowing ahead of time that he was going to fly with me in the cabin, we searched the internet, and after extensive research for an airline-approved (that is, approved for in-cabin travel) carrier, we decided on this model from Bergan. There are countless options available, but for the money, there is no better value. The Sherpa models are FAR more expensive, but don't provide you with appreciably more features for the extra money. This carrier is lightweight, easy to carry- even with a dog inside-and a great value for the $30 or so that it'll set you back. We HIGHLY recommend this carrier to anyone that travels with their pet! Great product!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good/really good not great, September 3, 2010
This review is from: Bergan Comfort Carrier Soft-Sided Pet Carrier, Large, Black (Misc.)
Bergan Comfort Carrier Soft-Sided Pet Carrier, Large, Black

I purchased two of these carriers to transport for two cats (Bosley and Gnocchi) from San Francisco to New York. Overall they did what they needed to do but there were a few mishaps. The price for these carriers are great at about $32 dollars per bag they were about half the price of what I had to pay to purchase a carrier locally or for other pet carriers on Amazon.

The pros:
*Cheap cost
*Works well for containing an animal for long periods of time
*Removable lining in a material my cats love
*Little pocket I can use to reach in and pet/comfort my pets
*Lots of openings I can slip my hand in through to give them things with (very useful for pre-attaching their harness leash for security walk through at the airport)
*The bag is very flexible. Virgin American let me take them on the place though the dimensions were a bit bigger than standard as they still fit under the seat.
*The bag is made from a very strong material on the outside. When my cat flipped over I thought the carrier would rip when I though I felt claws on the bottom side but really nothing ripped at all even when my cats tried to claw themselves out after being confined for 10 hours on a car ride from San Francisco to LA (prior to flying to NYC).
*My cats have large frames and there was still plenty of room for them to move about in the carrier. I wish there was a medium size carrier by Bergan though as this one is a bit on the larger size.

The cons:
*The lining is removable and not very secure. My cat freaked out at one point in the car ride and got under the lining and was sort of stuck underneath for a period of time before I could pull over and right him in the carrier
*The shoulder strap is not that strong. My cats weigh 12-13 pounds each and it felt like the plastic hooks might break
*The support the bag gives is not that great. Same as above, it definitely felt as if the cats were sagging in the bag and the weight distribution is not good unless you hold it by the handle from above.
*The bag may not hold up to consistent use. The fabric on the inside of the carrier after about 3 days of use is pretty clawed up (just small claw holes, no stratches/cuts in the fabric). I think the fabric inside is may from some kind of acetate/polyester blend and it isn't holding up well.
*The bag does not stay upright. After awhile my cats would freak out on their own inside the carrier and basically roll over. I used these carriers as kennels to contain my cats as I cleaned my new apartments bathroom with bleach and I put them on one side of the room. After about 30 minutes they had rolled themselves to mid-room. Basically it is like trapping them in a big flexible bag so don't expect them to stay put if you have active large cats.

Overall, while there are a lot of cons, the bag is a good deal and they look nice and my cats seemed to like them originally prior to being shut in them for a few hours (they now have a very strong aversion to the carriers once the zip is closed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well designed; excellent value, February 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I did lots of research online and in person before buying this carrier for my 8-lb. cat. I'd purchased another one because it was cheap ($15 or so), and learned the hard way that a flimsy, too-big carrier is actually worse than none at all. Advantages of this product: you can soothe the animal with a gentle hand via a zip-open access, the carrier has a soft, relatively stiff base that keeps your pet stable when carried, there's lots of ventilation, the carrier opens at both ends, and the product is well-constructed and sturdy. Small size is perfect for airline carry-on. (Don't know about the other sizes.) I'd read in another review that cats are more comfortable in a carrier on the small size rather than too roomy; now that I've gone both ways, I know that's true. Tip: two weeks prior to the trip I unzipped the carrier and placed it near her food dish so she'd become accustomed to it. I put a few kibbles inside, which she approached warily and finally ate. Getting her into the carrier on travel day was MUCH less traumatic than any previous trip, and being able to pet her reassuringly en route made a big difference. (BTW, I also purchased the "Come with me kitty" harness and leash for extra control in case she struggled while being removed and replaced for the airport security check. It worked well as a precautionary measure, but I sure can't imagine walking a cat with it.)

2.0 out of 5 stars Sizing by weight is not accurate, November 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this carrier for my 10 pound cat. It's well made, cozy and has nice features, although the color choice is not optimal. By weight, she should fit, but she is long in build and only about 2/3rds of her length can be accommodated. The actual dimensions of this carrier were several inches less than described, i.e., only 14 inches in length rather than 17 inches. So, I cannot use this for her and will give it to my daughter for her bunny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for plane., September 13, 2009

We used this to take our cat on a plane. She's a bit less than 10 lbs, but big and fluffy. She fit perfectly in it and had room to turn around. The carrier worked for plane transportation perfectly. You can use the handles to carry it or a should strap. The top didn't collapse, which was something I was concerned with while she was under the airplane seat in front of us. I don't think anyone knew we had a cat with us -- the bag is designed in such a way to limit how much a person can see inside, but if you're close up, you can see your pet. The zippered opening so you can put your hand in to pet your pet or give your pet treats is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars exactly what I was looking for!, November 14, 2008

I bought this for emergencies, like if there is a fire and I have to evacuate with my cats, so I wanted something small and light.- I have two cats, 8 lbs and 11 lbs. My 8 lbs cat fits very cozy in this one, the 11lbs one will probably not fit, even if it did, it will definitely look really uncomfortable so I wouldn't even try.

I also own a sherpa carrier and a plastic carrier but figured I cannot carry two at the same time ('cause I'm small and it's just too heavy, considering carrying 20lbs of my cats weight), so I got this bag to put my smaller cat in, and plan to use the sherpa for the bigger cat since I can put both over my shoulder and go (can't do that with the plastic carrier!).

The bag comes in a flat box so I had to re-bend the wires on the sides and I stuffed it so it will get back to it's original shape. So, it is definitely not as sturdy as the sherpa but it is super light and portable. I would say if you don't mind a little bulk and weight, go with the sherpa bag, it's a very nice bag. But, on the other hand you want a light weight small bag on the go, this is the bag for you!
Also, if your pet weighs about 10 lbs but is bigger than an average small animal, you should get a bigger one. My small 8 lb girl like I said, is real COZY in there and my 11 lb boy although he is NOT fat will not fit because he is longer, the few lbs really make a difference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Top Quality, September 4, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for an airline trip with our 6 pound Chihuahua, Rudi. He fit the carrier pretty well, somewhat cramped though, but it does offer plenty of ventilation, and fairly easy access for getting the reluctant pooch in and out of the unit, and has a nicely padded faux sheepskin floor that's removable and washable. The carrier has the right dimensions for under-seat stowage according to most airlines, and it did fit easily under the seat in front of me, even in coach class. However, being a 'soft-sided' design, the 'frame' seems a bit flimsy and doesn't hold its shape but tends to collapse around the occupant, especially when it's carried over the shoulder with the strap. The carrier has mesh expandable pockets and zippers that are useful for bringing a leash, food, water, etc. One of the mesh pockets on my unit popped a seam the first time out--a defective stitch. Overall, for the fair price and passable quality and quick shipping, I think it is a good buy, and will do the job for a few more trips.
