Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A big guidebook to a small place, Berkeley Inside / Out supplies every cogent fact, past and present, about this remarkable city. The author thoroughly investigates Berkeley's institutions: educational, religious, cultural, and political. Restaurants and recreation are noted. A history of the town, authored by Malcolm Margolin, is included. In short, this is the only book about Berkeley one is ever likely to need. Locals will find it an excellent reference; tourists may be overwhelmed by the amount of detail, but necessary information may be reached quickly by resort to the index. Recommended for both reference and circulation.

More About the Author

Born in Atlanta, Georgia as the middle son of two teachers, Don Pitcher grew up all over the East Coast, from Florida to Maine. He moved west for college, receiving a masters degree in fire ecology from the University of California Berkeley. A love of nature pulled him north to Alaska, and an aversion to office work kept him outside for the next 15 years, conducting ecological research, building backcountry trails, working as a wilderness ranger, mapping grizzly habitat, and operating salmon weirs. He went on to write or photograph a dozen guidebooks for Avalon Travel, DK Publishing, Sasquatch Books, Heyday Books, and Fodor's. He also contributes to Triporati and other websites, and is a professional wedding photographer. Don Pitcher's photos have appeared in a multitude of publications and advertisements, and his prints are sold in many Alaska and Washington galleries. He lives in Homer, Alaska with his wife, Karen Shemet, and their children, Aziza and Rio. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, excellent!, March 28, 2006
By
Matyowynne (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Berkeley Inside/Out: A Guide to Restaurants, Entertainment, People and Politics (Paperback)
I loved this book. It is so much more than a travel book. It was my guide when I first moved to Berkeley in 1996. It embodies so much about what Berkeley means, particularly the history about the Hillside club and the beautiful neighborhoods they left behind. Maybeck and crew saved the city and that wonderful hillside from being populated by little white boxes and made it something truly special. Anyway, if you are moving to Berkeley or live there already, this book will help you find the soul of the place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, though dated alternative guide to Berkeley, November 6, 1997
This review is from: Berkeley Inside/Out: A Guide to Restaurants, Entertainment, People and Politics (Paperback)
An excellent, though dated (1989) guide to Berkeley. It covers restaurants, history, neighborhoods, and has several self guided tours. A must if you want to know much more about Berkeley.
