Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Set of 2 replacement filters. Will fit the following Berkey systems: Travel Berkey, Big Berkey, Royal Berkey, Imperial Berkey, Crown Berkey, Berkey Light. Black Berkey Purification Elements are more powerful than any other gravity filter element currently available. In fact, we tested the Black Berkey purification elements with more than 10,000 times the concentration of pathogens per liter than is required by standard test protocol. This concentration of pathogens is so great that the post filtered water should be expected to contain 100,000 or more pathogens per liter (99.99% reduction - the requirement for pathogenic removal). Incredibly the purification elements removed 100%. Absolutely no pathogens were cultured from the effluent or were able to be detected, even under an electron microscope, setting a new standard in water purification. Black Berkey purification elements are so powerful, they can remove red food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Virtually no other filtration element can duplicate this performance. The powerful Black Berkey purification elements also remove or reduce viruses, pathogenic cysts, parasites, harmful or unwanted chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides, VOCs, detergents, organic solvents, trihalomethanes, cloudiness, silt, sediment, nitrates, nitrites, heavy metals, foul tastes and odors, yet they leave in the healthful and beneficial minerals that your body needs.

Also, a company called Pro Pur also makes filters that will fit the Berkey units.

I feel kind of bad, in my recommendations to buy these products, since I was a significant Berkey cheerleader for a while.

I purchased the Imperial Berkey about 2 years ago. The unit came with 6 Black Berkey filters. I used only 2 at a time. 3 months ago I replaced the original first 2 Black Berkey filters with a pair from an unopened box. This left me with 2 more new filters left.

After one month, the water started tasting funny. I looked inside and discovered that the Black Berkey filters were both coming apart and oozing some gelatinous material into the water compartment where the filters were.

I have tried and tried to contact Berkey, but there phone number is just a voice recording. They have not answered my numerous emails. I contacted the distributor who is not at fault. He has been overwhelmed with similar complaints.

I cleaned out the Berkey unit completely and installed the final two Black Berkey filters. Last week, the same thing happened again! The filters were coming apart on the bottom where the black part is supposed to be sealed with the black plastic ring.

Now I have no filters left! I bought the Berkey Water units for everyday purification as well as for emergency water filtering in a survival situation. I have lost confidence in this company. Berkey does not respond to complaints, you don't even know if you are reaching them because no emails are ever acknowledged.

Do your research. There is another company called AquaRain, which makes filters that fit the Berkey. They are made in the USA. Also, a company called Pro Pur also makes filters that will fit the Berkey units. Pro Pur filters, unlike Berkey, are NSF certified.

Sorry to see another formerly great company fail due to poor quality control and even worse customer service. But in this economy, and with my family's health on the line, I can no longer recommend Berkey products or its company. Look elsewhere.

The filter units fall apart as others say. Sadly, that's not all that's wrong with these.

The glue stops holding and they let through water unfiltered. This takes a while, for me it happens three to six months into use. The problem is you never know when this has happened short of running red food coloring through your unit with every fill. I've had this happen with every filter since 2009, so their claim that this was fixed sometime in 2011 isn't true my in case. In retrospect I'm not sure why I let this continue for as long as it did, but that's how a lot of things in one's life appear upon reflection. For my family a water filter is a luxury not a necessity, so I don't feel as this product put our life in danger. However, if you depend on this product to clean a hazardous water source than this glue issue would be stopper right there.

Let's talk about the cost effectiveness of this unit. I've been using the Royal Berkey system since mid 2009 and it's now Jan 2013. I've been through at least five filter sets, perhaps six or seven. Assuming just five that is an average life of two Black Berkey filters lasting eight months. We use almost exactly three gallons of filtered water per day. Doing the math shows that each filter lasts for approximately 360 gallons, not the 3,000 or 6,000 they claim. I filter well water that tested within nominal levels for the six things my relatively cheap ($40) home test kit tested. So understand we're not talking about filtering combined sewer overflow or nuclear rain. It's basic home accounting here, a product that lasts 10 to 15% of what the seller promises should have thrown up some red flags after my first filter change. I though I was tied to these filters because I had bought the Berkey, which was costly, so I kept buying them blindly.

I have been a defender of the Black Berkey system for years. Not any more. A friend alerted me to the controversy going on here at amazon.com, regarding the efficacy, or lack thereof, of the Black Berkey elements, and, the "questionable" nature of some of the alleged "laboratory testing" presented to trusting buyers by New Millennium Concepts, Ltd., the manufacturer of the Black Berkey elements.

Initially, I found that the now-infamous "laboratory report" alleged to have been conducted at Louisiana State University was outright fraudulent. As other people have indicated, one can write the scientist named on the report, Professor Ralph J. Portier, Ph.D., and he will cheerfully confirm the report is not genuine. I did just that (and you can, too).

I was disturbed sufficiently by this expose, and I consequently ordered the best, affordable home water analysis kit available here at amazon.com, one manufactured by the respected Industrial Test Systems (ITS). Unfortunately, due to many family matters demanding my time, including chronically-ill parents, it wasn't until this week that I was able to perform the testing using best practices possible in a home setting.

I am now very sorry - and deeply embarrassed - to say that the Black Berkey output tests positive for Coliform bacteria. '

I performed the tests in the most hygienic and scientifically-sound manner possible in a home setting, and state confidently that no cross-contamination caused this positive test. The only explanation is the failure of the Black Berkey elements to perform their claimed "self-sterilization."

I would suggest that anyone interested in getting into the Berkey water "purification" system - DON'T.
