Editorial Reviews

Federico Aubele returns to a smoky realm of acoustic guitar licks, heavy rhythms and sinister dub atmospherics for his fourth studio album, Berlin 13. The record pulls from the personal transformation Aubele experienced in his time living in Berlin and the vibe of a city strongly associated with electronic music. Moving to Berlin was a great experience for me, though not an easy one. It forced me to face a lot of my demons. When everything that you take for granted disappears and you find yourself in a whole new scenario, you need to redefine all things in your life, Aubele says. Sort out what you want to keep and what you need to leave behind. It can be painful, but it is a great experience once you assimilate it. It reminds me of that Bukowsky phrase that goes: what matters most is how well you walk through fire The inclusion of the number 13 in the title refers to the Tarot Cards: the 13th card is Death . While many may draw a negative connotation with this card, it can actually signify a deep renewal and transformation in a person's life. I learned how to read the Tarot Cards when I was still living in Buenos Aires. It's a fascinating system for self-exploration. The 13 can mean a deep crisis that eliminates everything that prevents you from moving forward. That is exactly what I experienced in Berlin .To set the tone for this album, Aubele revisited his deepest musical influences, focusing on those he believed essential inhis formation as an artist. From the backing beats to the musique-concrete samples, and the nylon string guitar layered with his baritone voice, the result is a blending of the elements in his unique style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect. March 30, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Back to the same sounds as his first two albums, Federico kills it on this record. More dubed out then his previous efforts and a bit more electronic. Perfect from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Federico Aubele ‎- Berlin 13 September 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD
BERLIN 13 sees Federico Aubele extending his reach even more internationally. Though "Berlin" still has Spanish lyrics and Argentinian guitar strumming layered over dub beats, you can hear something new brewing. Things come to a head with the gorgeous "Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue," which introduces some gypsy elements as well as a glitchy guitar into a melancholy atmosphere. Aubele also delves more into house rhythms: "In Your Name" has a solid 4/4 and a spacy, almost campy background, though Aubele's vocals keep things centered, while "Kreuzberg" wavers somewhere between the dancefloor and outer space. The slow "Lágrimas Viejas" is dreamy and ephemeral, while the reverb-laced "13" puts in a slightly harder thump. The more abstract "El Miedo" closes out the album on a solid note, making for a mysterious and thoroughly fascinating listen.

1.0 out of 5 stars awful August 27, 2011
By nicolas
Format:Audio CD
doesn't the guy get it? he sings awfully, terribly bad, false, it's ridiculous. i didn't buy anything more after panamericana. stick to the girls (or better male singers), and to the music (and let that evolve), what u do best, mr aubele. but please someone tell him he should stay away from the microphone. don't the guys from TC/ESL notice it?
