Biography

One of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the 20th Century, Edward "Duke" Ellington led a band from the early 1920s until his death in 1974. He composed new material relentlessly, specifically writing to get the best out of his band members. In the late 20s his band earned a residency at Harlem's Cotton Club, which brought nationwide fame to Ellington, as their performances were… Read more in Amazon's Duke Ellington Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Prime Ellington, October 21, 2000
By
Jerome Wilson (Greenbelt, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Berlin '65 / Paris '67 (Audio CD)
This Pablo concert set comes from two Eurpoean concerts in the mid-60's when most of Duke Ellington's legendary later soloists were still in the orchestra and two of his master saxophonists are featured, Paul Gonsalves and Johhny Hodges. Gonsalves is commanding on Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge" and kicks around the blues on "Happy-Go-Lucky Local". Hodges is a thing of beauty on Strayhorn's last masterpiece, "Blood Count" and also leads the band on a high-stepping version of "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". Throw in Jimmy Hamilton's snaky clarinet feature, "Ad Lib On Nippon" and some high-flying stride piano from Ellington himself and you've got a fine set. It's hard to recommend this over other excellent concert recordings from the same era but this is a good one. If you're new to Duke, it's a good snapshot of his live form. If you love Hodges or Gonsalves, it's essential.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great performances, terrible album reissue, March 26, 2011
This review is from: Berlin '65 / Paris '67 (Audio CD)
I can't think that a historic recording label like Pablo made a so great mistake. In the booklet inner are liner notes from an other album! Yes, liner note is from a Cannonball Adderley album...
It's an unforgivable oversight.
However there are great performances from two European concerts
