A Great Album of an Historic Live Concert in Berlin,
By Jim Wilkins (Galesburg, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Berlin: Concert for the People (Audio CD)
"A Concert for the People" is an amazing live album from a free 1980 open-air concert on the steps of the historic Reichstag, right next to the Berlin Wall. The concert was pretty much flawless, unfortunatly the recording session was not. The Mobile One equipment malfunctioned and there were loud noises and buzzes throughout the recording. BJH, along with Martin Lawrence did a major overdub at Strawberry studios, which is why the album wasn't released until 1982. This concert featured some of the band's most popular early works, performed while at the peak of their musical ability. The live rendition of "Berlin" brought the house down, and still brings a shiver down my spine after all these years. The haunting "In Memory of the Martyrs" may have been better than the studio version, it has a passion that is awesome. As always, they finished up with "Hymn" and the resounding "Yeah's" from the crowd really crank it up. This is a must have CD for any Barclay James Harvest fan. As an interesting aside, the German pressing had two additional songs not on the American album; "Love on the Line" and "Rock-N-Roll Lady".

The album does not do the concert justice. Was at this concert in Berlin and the atmosphere was unbelievable. Something looking back on it now could have only happened in divided Berlin at the time.
