I saw this movie as a child in the eighties and was always haunted by the harrowing and dramatic ending. I think I must have been searching for this film for almost as long as I can remember IMDb has been around. And I can't believe I finally found it! How appropriate, being the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall this year.

The movie is pretty simple and efficient plot-wise. And it's a nail-biter. The protagonists, led by Richard Thomas as a former US Army soldier stationed in Berlin, want to build a tunnel under The Wall to help their families cross from East to West Berlin. There's just enough character development to move the plot along and build suspense since no one knows who can be trusted. It doesn't aim to be an historical film, of course, and isn't shy about its American-centric viewpoint. That's also what makes it really interesting historical fiction, however. Filmed in 1981, and set in 1961, it captures the zeitgeist of the Cold War era--the anxiety and the Manichean friction between East and West. For a more balanced view of life behind the Iron Curtain, try looking for the film "Good Bye Lenin!" on Amazon.

I like how Richard Thomas (The Waltons) always brings a touch of insecurity and vulnerability to his characters. It's way more interesting than the hyper-masculine leading men in Hollywood these days. Here, Thomas gives a fine portrayal of someone completely determined to take the mission to the very end, although he becomes increasingly conflicted over some of the hard choices he has to make. His decisions in the film require making moral tradeoffs, and by the end, you wonder if it was all worth it. The ending is quite traumatic and sad, be warned. If you want to relive a bit of Cold War angst though, try this film.

Great movie. I was looking for one of the "tunnel out of the East" movies that I recall from my early years on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the destruction of that terrible city-splitting wall. I was surprised to find this 1970s film - it was vaguely familiar but it was much better than the ones I recall from in the 60s in black & white. This one is much less political and more "adventure" than the earlier films. The cast is tremendous from the stars right down to the folks who were so afraid to do anything.

I found the basic story of interest as I was a child when this happened and don't recall much however I think the movie itself moved slowly.

Old school characters: you have a courageous, overly responsible hero, a weak acquiescent heroine, set in the tense misery of divided Germany/Berlin. While the characters are less than believable, the quest and the setting make this a good film of historical fiction.

Richard Thomas gives a very poor performance. He also plays a weak, sniveling character, who has very poor organizational skills. I mention this because it ultimately impacts the movie's end. Not worth your time.

Not once did my husband doze of - sure sign of boredom - despite the length of the movie. Movie story kept moving wondering what was going to happen next. Even had us on the edge of our seats at times.

This is a great movie...it gives you a real feel for the people that were separated from their famlies and friends.......also the traitors among them....
