4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Listen., December 13, 2007
This is an Amazing recording. However, if you're like me, the first thing you do is rush right to the fourth or fifth movement of the Symphony Fantastique. Or, you may rush to the best parts of the Damnation of Faust, etc. That is not the way to enjoy these performances. If you listen just to the big pieces you will feel that the tempi are off, the balance odd, and the interpretation completely quixotic. These are best listened to as entire pieces. I listened to 1 CD or 1 Act at a time. This way you can immerse yourself into the entire story and enjoy the grand vision that is Berlioz. Sir Colin Davis doesn't give us the most lyrical, the most dynamic interpretation, or even the cleanest interpretation of any of these works. What he does give us, however, is a subtle interpretation that gets to the heart of what Berlioz was seeking. Berlioz was strongly influenced by the Grand Architect himself (Beethoven) and sought to use expansive lines to tell his tales. An example is the use of the idée fixe from the Sympony Fantastique or the Harold theme from Harold et Italie. It is this genius, this subtle art that Sir Davis taps into and draws out more poignantly than any other conductor, and it is for that reason that this set receives a high recommendation.
