An early triumph for Davis,

This review is from: Berlioz: Requiem / Symphonie Funebre et Tromphale, Opp. 5,15 (Audio CD)
You can buy this performance in a bargain box on Philips with all the other choral works of Berlioz under Davis, but any way you get it, this is an outstanding Requiem and one of the first to make an impression in the stereo era. Munch preceded it with a sloppy reading whose authentic spirit was also let down by mediocre choral work. Here, everything is committed and passionate down to the last bar. In my estimation, this performance joins Bernstein and Levine at the top of the list.
