This review is from: Berlioz: Roméo et Juliette; Le Troyens à Carthage (Audio CD)
It's a shame that Talmi and the San Diego Symphony didn't make more Berlioz recordings. Talmi understands Berioz' complex and quirky nature very well, and the orchestra is world-class and completely immersed in the Berlioz style. These are most of the "best parts" of Romeo et Juliette. The Scene d'Amour is one of the most amazingly beautiful pieces of music ever written and it is gorgeously performed here. As a bonus, you get the prelude that Berlioz had to write for the second part of Les Troyens when he couldn't get the whole work performed, thanks to the arrogant ignorance of the French musical establishment of the time. This disc would be a top recommendation even if it weren't inexpensive.
